They already do the first and last thing, write books about books that is.

They write books about books, but that seems to be more writing about an artifact or historical event, and not so much writing critically as a 'compare and contrast' suggests.

I am not sure how much of that is memory constraints.  I guess a lot can always be left to your imagination, too much detail might not be a good thing.
