Vampire Fort Questions
« on: April 16, 2019, 09:54:43 am »

1) If invaders are knocked unconscious, would vampires register that as a sleeping individual and thus go nuts and try to suck them dry?
2) How are you able to prevent them from getting unfocused due to a lack of fine meals & alcohol?
3) What's the best method of preventing migrants from getting snacked on?
4) Is it required or harbor some added bonus if the vampires do snack on people?
5) How would one make a race of people that don't need to drink or eat [goblins] become vampires in fort mode?

2. Vampire tavern keepers can serve other vampires booze without any significant risk of being fed upon (I think: I don't know if vampires take advantage of vampires unconscious due to inebriation to feed upon them). You can also use goblin tavern keepers, as goblins don't sleep. There's no way to get them to eat, though (and even if blood counted as food, it won't be in their preferred list).
3. Screening of migrants and isolation and observation of those not shown to be alive. That's not particularly efficient, though, so vampire hunts tend to start when someone has been found drained. Also note that visitors (including those hiding in performance troupes) can be vampires, so blocking visitors would block that threat, but it's probably at too high a price (regular visitors are currently announced as being vampires on map entry [although it's easy to miss it in the log deluge, but performance troupe members are not]).
5. DFHacking could probably do it. The vanilla method is to find a deity that curses defiles and get your gobbo to perform such an act. That probably involves having the bugger get stressed enough to start tantruming while inside a suitable temple with statues.  I assume it would be tricky to recover the sanity of the resulting vampire (or were) , though, so you'd probably end up with insane vampires.

3) Create a surface fort serving only blood-contaminated water and only move migrants into the main fort once they've converted. If you use communal bedrooms you shouldn't have as much trouble with new vamps draining their co-migrants, since I don't think they actually drain people in a room with others in it. Otherwise you could go full micro on this and stash every migrant in a fully stocked hotel room with a locked door until they turn.

HA! You can have a militia squad stationed in a room with a sleeping dorf targeted by a vampire (you can e.g. save scum to know in advance where the target is), and nobody saw anything... I believe there are reports of crowded taverns with poisoned patrons being drained without anyone seeing anything as well.

While turning everyone into vampires will cause them not to be drained by vampires, it's a rather backwards way of protecting them from being drained by vampires.

Instead of the vampire drinking your dwarves, your dwarves drink the vampire. Seems logical to me.

My idea is to make the entire fort vampires, not just one goblin. I'll look into the DFHack solution, thank you!

Good to know on the first part. I remembered reading that communal bedrooms helped, but apparently that's wrong. Probably a bug that'll get sorted out once Toady redoes witnesses for investigation purposes.

On the second part, as DSE just said, they wanted an entire Vampire fortress. I'd remembered that, so of course I geared my response towards turning everyone into vampires.

I think you could give them mugs laced with vampire blood in adventure mode. You'd have to deal with fort retiring whenever you need to convert more goblins, however.

Ah, but one vampire becomes many vampires-- you just need to find a way to harvest its blood for Fun and profit! A nice well over a floodable repeating spike chamber should do the trick.

5. The only way I can think of is using the tavern. But I don't think there is a reliable method to get enough vampire blood into a barrel or goblet in fortress mode. In adventure mode you can scoop up some with a goblet and put it in a barrel. By pouring and scooping up again you can create an infinite amount of any liquid. Tedious, but should be able to fill a few barrels this way and have them served at the tavern in fortress mode.
Maybe. I've only done this with regular liquids, never tried contaminated. Let us know if you succeed?

4. In adventure mode it takes months before stats start to decline. The wiki was not clear if you even could die from lack of blood. In fortress mode, they seem to go without blood for years without ill effects.

3. As demonstrated in Kruggsmash's Honeystoker YouTube series, immigrants will get thirsty always before they need sleep. As long as you provide only contaminated water and no booze whatsoever, all immigrants will be turned.

I recommend that series to anyone wanting to run a vampire fortress.

2. The series also show that poisoners aka taverkeepers and performers cannot kill their vampire customers. No choking to death if you do not breath. Let the booze flow! (after everyone is turned that is)

1. In a regular fight, vampires are going for the kill. Just like regular dwarves. They don't stop to have a snack.
