"Let's go then."

~~Chapter 2: Not-So-Usual Traveler Woes~~

An hour later, in the forest between the university and Blumhart city...

Captain and his investigators were walking through the forest, and were approaching a stream, with two small bridges hoisted over it. On the other side, where some already where, was a large, imposing statue of a woman in royal regalia, with a small dedicated headstone in front of it, with a pile of fresh flowers laid at it.

~~Player Turn 1~~

Continue westwards.

11,7, ponder the concept of mortality.

"A roadside grave. With fresh flowers. What an unusual combination." Shaelynn read the inscription on the headstone, if any, then turned her attention to the statue.

EMPRESS GRIFEN I
? - 296 TE
Savior of the Empire, we
will forever remember her
in our hearts and minds
BLESSED BE HER SOUL

The statue itself was of a tall woman with flowing hair. She wore a majestic, flowing dress, yet her breast was adorned with a cuirass. She had a stern gaze but soft smile, her left hand placed on her waist, her right one resting on the pommel of a large longsword.

Truly, she must've been a great warrior and revered monarch to have such a statue built for her.

13-7

”Empress Grifen.... that sounds familiar. I vaguely recall reading records of archeological findings by an Overseasland official who was consort to one of that name? He seemed very attached to them.”

Shaelynn nodded. "She is, in fact. She became Empress at the end of one of the continents many civil wars, around one hundred and fifty years ago. There was another war soon after, disputing her claims to the throne, but she quelled the rebellion. In addition to bringing peace, she also outlawed slavery soon after. All texts that I've read indicate that she was adored by her people. Truly, she was a gem of the Overseasland."

"Heh. Wonder how she'd feel about her country belonging to the Reich now."
He reached up and patted the cheek of the statue.
"Sorry, your highness. Guess it didn't last."

There was a soft crack, and the nose of the statue fell off.

"Gah- crap crap crap."
With surprisingly decent reflexes, Niels managed to catch the nose in his free hand.
"Ah, damn. Didn't even touch the damn nose."
"I know I said it didn't last, but there's no reason to get all broken up on me, your highness."
He held the chunk of statue tentatively, as if expecting it to break further.
"Hurm."
"Any way to, I don't know, stick it back on, you reckon?"

"...are you serious. Are you absolutely serious. Step away from that right now."

Altha walked closer and with one hand attempted to shove Niel out of  the way (though it was more of a small push considering their relative strength and size). She then began examining the condition of the statue and its broken off piece, being careful not to touch it in any way. An also perhaps, examining its detailing out of her own curiosity a bit while at it.

"This is why we ought to keep such things in museums." she grumbled.

Shaelynn lowered her hands. "I cannot personally do so but it is my understanding that there is a method by which broken pieces of statues may be reattached. Place the missing section at her feet- when there is an opportunity I should like to send someone to restore her."

The Captain noticed the commotion.

"Niels! Stop touching the statue! You might break something."

Niels, indeed, was not moved much by Altha's shove. He frowned down at her for a moment before shrugging and putting the nose down on the base of the statue and swinging himself back up onto his wyvern.
"That, er, ship has indeed sailed, Captain."
"Empress Grifen is in slight nasal distress. I guess the stone must have become brittle over time and weather, or something."
