Training I
The days for the family's two gladiators were long, hard, and demanding. Thanks to the intensity of training provided by the Numidian
doctore the pair of gladiators were well prepared for the fights to come.

7The Games I
The Forum ArenaTertius Avitus Cato leads Severina Caecilia Sabina through the Forum towards the arena. She'd seen little of the venture but had watched Games before and was excited to see how the Magnii fared in the business of blood. As they approach there is a bit of commotion from the holding area the gladiators were delivered to. Tertius sees a particularly large German, Athaulf sitting on the ground with his arms crossed, legs stretched. At his ankle is a thick chain that trails to a manacle currently in some poor fool's hands. The guy is trying to fasten it onto Obelix' ankle.
"What's this?" Tertius questions, "I wasn't told of any special rules."
"Yeah well," the guy remarks as Obelix keeps shifting his leg around with a huff every time the manacle gets close, though otherwise not resisting, "The man running the show saw what you brought with you and doesn't see it being a fair fight. People come to see a show."
There is a
clink as metal clasps around flesh.
"There we go. Now let's get these two moving. Their fight needs to start."
The man waves a group of armed guards over who help equip the two gladiators, guide them to the gate stuck between a pair of large wooden bleachers, and deter them from trying anything brash. Tertius and Severina find themselves a nice spot to sit and watch the fight.
Athaulf and Obelix are both none too pleased with recent developments. It wasn't
so bad, at least they'd been living in the same space and gotten used to one another. Still, Athaulf is none too pleased about being chained to the drunkard. Obelix likewise would rather not be chained to a German, regardless of the situation. They're nothing but *hic* trouble.
The editor for the arena steps onto his raised platform [I had a description but realized when typing it for the Flavii that's it's literally just Danny DeVito but Ancient Rome] and the murmur of the crowd falls silent.
"Indeed we witnessed an impressive first showing earlier today! And now that the blood and gore has been cleaned from the arena, we bring forth our next fighters who we can only hope undo our cleaning! First we have a pair of fighters offered by the Magnii. Enter,
ATHAULF and OBELIX!"
The gate in front of the pair opens and they walk into the center of the arena. Some of the crowd cheers, but the generally muted and disgruntled looks on their faces fails to please the viewers.
"And their opponent, an offering from House Caelus. Enter,
ASKUZAI!"
Opposite the German and Gaul enters an ashy-skinned hulk with a pair of forward-curved swords and bronze greaves. He spits in a language nobody understands and
somehow manages to be less appealing than Athaulf and Obelix.
The pair tries to move but tugs at one another and quickly become a tripping hazard. Athaulf throws one of his hasta at Askuzai as he comes forward and tears a small chunk out of his left thigh. It might have been a squarer hit had his helmet not slipped down a little and thrown Athaulf off of his mark. Askuzai stumbles back but regains his composure as he uses the blade of his sword to scrape blood from his skin onto it, then flicks off onto the ground.
Askuzai charges Obelix, who'd turned his attention to breaking the chain attached to his ankle. Athaulf yanks on the chain and throws Obelix off balance, saving his life as one of Askuzai's blades slices through space once occupied by the Gaul. Obelix fails to notice this and instead pulls on the chain and throwing Athaulf off balance. He goes to turn his attention to Askuzai but is met by his blades. The first strike strikes the lorica and the blade turns, bouncing off Obelix. The second however rips through the left bicep before hitting the lorica. Athaulf manages to thrust his remaining hasta between the two and stop the next blow. Athaulf follows up by pressing his body against Askuzai and forcing him backward. With a hardy push the combatants are separated once more.
Obelix holds his axe in one hand while the other arm dangles uselessly, blood streaming down his arm, off his fingertips, and to the ground. He moves with Athaulf, eyes locked on Askuzai, as the trio circle. Of the three he is the first to jump in attempting to use his axe to chop through Askuzai's head as if it were wood. The strike is blocked, but a sword falls from Askuzai's grasp. Seeing an opening, Athaulf moves in and thrusts his hasta at Askuzai's exposed midsection. The strike is parried and the shaft of the spear splinters. Obelix brings another heavy strike down and is blocked once more. Askuzai goes to strike Obelix once more but stops suddenly - Athaulf used the brief distraction caused by Obelix to grab the end of the spear with a tip and jam it down into Askuzai's shoulder. He grunted and gurgled as Athaulf pressed down more until Askuzai collapsed under him.
The exciting fight managed to bring business to the vendors around the forum. They appreciate the help!
