Training I

The days for the family's two gladiators were long, hard, and demanding. Thanks to the intensity of training provided by the Numidian doctore the pair of gladiators were well prepared for the fights to come.

Athaulf
V: 4 > 10
A: 1 > 5
T: 7 > 15

Obelix
V: 5 > 8
A: 1 > 2
T: 5 > 7

The Games I

The Forum Arena

Tertius Avitus Cato leads Severina Caecilia Sabina through the Forum towards the arena. She'd seen little of the venture but had watched Games before and was excited to see how the Magnii fared in the business of blood. As they approach there is a bit of commotion from the holding area the gladiators were delivered to. Tertius sees a particularly large German, Athaulf sitting on the ground with his arms crossed, legs stretched. At his ankle is a thick chain that trails to a manacle currently in some poor fool's hands. The guy is trying to fasten it onto Obelix' ankle.

"What's this?" Tertius questions, "I wasn't told of any special rules."

"Yeah well," the guy remarks as Obelix keeps shifting his leg around with a huff every time the manacle gets close, though otherwise not resisting, "The man running the show saw what you brought with you and doesn't see it being a fair fight. People come to see a show."

There is a clink as metal clasps around flesh.

"There we go. Now let's get these two moving. Their fight needs to start."

The man waves a group of armed guards over who help equip the two gladiators, guide them to the gate stuck between a pair of large wooden bleachers, and deter them from trying anything brash. Tertius and Severina find themselves a nice spot to sit and watch the fight.

Athaulf and Obelix are both none too pleased with recent developments. It wasn't so bad, at least they'd been living in the same space and gotten used to one another. Still, Athaulf is none too pleased about being chained to the drunkard. Obelix likewise would rather not be chained to a German, regardless of the situation. They're nothing but *hic* trouble.

The editor for the arena steps onto his raised platform [I had a description but realized when typing it for the Flavii that's it's literally just Danny DeVito but Ancient Rome] and the murmur of the crowd falls silent.

"Indeed we witnessed an impressive first showing earlier today! And now that the blood and gore has been cleaned from the arena, we bring forth our next fighters who we can only hope undo our cleaning! First we have a pair of fighters offered by the Magnii. Enter, ATHAULF and OBELIX!"

The gate in front of the pair opens and they walk into the center of the arena. Some of the crowd cheers, but the generally muted and disgruntled looks on their faces fails to please the viewers.

"And their opponent, an offering from House Caelus. Enter, ASKUZAI!"

Opposite the German and Gaul enters an ashy-skinned hulk with a pair of forward-curved swords and bronze greaves. He spits in a language nobody understands and somehow manages to be less appealing than Athaulf and Obelix.

The pair tries to move but tugs at one another and quickly become a tripping hazard. Athaulf throws one of his hasta at Askuzai as he comes forward and tears a small chunk out of his left thigh. It might have been a squarer hit had his helmet not slipped down a little and thrown Athaulf off of his mark. Askuzai stumbles back but regains his composure as he uses the blade of his sword to scrape blood from his skin onto it, then flicks off onto the ground.

Askuzai charges Obelix, who'd turned his attention to breaking the chain attached to his ankle. Athaulf yanks on the chain and throws Obelix off balance, saving his life as one of Askuzai's blades slices through space once occupied by the Gaul. Obelix fails to notice this and instead pulls on the chain and throwing Athaulf off balance. He goes to turn his attention to Askuzai but is met by his blades. The first strike strikes the lorica and the blade turns, bouncing off Obelix. The second however rips through the left bicep before hitting the lorica. Athaulf manages to thrust his remaining hasta between the two and stop the next blow. Athaulf follows up by pressing his body against Askuzai and forcing him backward. With a hardy push the combatants are separated once more.

Obelix holds his axe in one hand while the other arm dangles uselessly, blood streaming down his arm, off his fingertips, and to the ground. He moves with Athaulf, eyes locked on Askuzai, as the trio circle. Of the three he is the first to jump in attempting to use his axe to chop through Askuzai's head as if it were wood. The strike is blocked, but a sword falls from Askuzai's grasp. Seeing an opening, Athaulf moves in and thrusts his hasta at Askuzai's exposed midsection. The strike is parried and the shaft of the spear splinters. Obelix brings another heavy strike down and is blocked once more. Askuzai goes to strike Obelix once more but stops suddenly - Athaulf used the brief distraction caused by Obelix to grab the end of the spear with a tip and jam it down into Askuzai's shoulder. He grunted and gurgled as Athaulf pressed down more until Askuzai collapsed under him.

The exciting fight managed to bring business to the vendors around the forum. They appreciate the help! [Victory: +Favor Token]
We have also decided to share the benefits of wealth with the less fortunate and unlanded through food donations. [Reward: +Fame Token x2]

----------------

With our first victory in hand it is time to begin expanding business. First the family must decide which upcoming games they will participate in in the Planning Phase. The games are as follows:

Back Alley Pit
1. Unbooked v.s. Unbooked

Gambling Den Requires Token to Enter
1. Gladiator v.s. Unbooked - Reward: 1 Fortune Token, 1 Fame Token
2. Gladiator v.s. Unbooked - Reward: 3 Fortune Tokens

Forum Arena
1. Gladiator (V4/A4/T8/S7) and Unbooked v.s. Unbooked - Modified 1v2
2. Gladiator (V6/A10/T8/S9) v.s. Unbooked - Standard 1v1
3. Unbooked and Unbooked v.s. Unbooked and Unbooked - Standard 2v2

IT IS NOW THE PLANNING PHASE.

GM NOTE:
DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE IS A RELATIVELY SIMPLE DECISION TO MAKE DURING THIS PHASE, YOU WILL ALSO BE ALLOWED TO PROPOSE TOKEN-UTILIZING ACTION PLANS FOR THIS PHASE AS WELL. ULTIMATELY THIS MEANS THE ACTION PHASE BECOMES UNIQUE ONLY IN THAT YOU RECRUIT DOODZ AND GET LOOTZ. ALSO KEEP IN MIND YOU CAN DECIDE TO ASSIGN FAMILY MEMBERS TO SPECIFIC ACTIONS IF YOU WANT, AS WELL AS ANY GLADIATOR COMPANY THEY MAY HAVE FOR SOME REASON.

I'm thinking we go for the 2v2. Or I would if someone hadn't shafted us on gladiator payment :I

Otherwise, booking Athulf for a 1v1 in either the den or the Forum is a good plan, though the Den requires a token to get into in the first place, so my suggestion would be for the forum fight. Hell, the 2v2 isn't a bad plan, if we don't mind there being a lot of random elements in the plan.

With a non-shit weapon and some Agility training, Athaulf should be able to win Forum Arena fight 2.

I'd then be tempted to put Obelix in the 2v2 fight. The sheer volume of randomness there would make any prediction meaningless anyway, so his injury probably won't affect things much.

If we want to risk it, maybe we should put Athaulf in the second Gambling Den fight. We sorely need tokens, so if we focus our attentions on him this turn we should be able to bring him up enough that to win that fight too.

I'm going to play it safe and go for the known 1v1.  I don't think risking a deadly Flavian encounter in the blind 2 v. 2 is worth it for the same reward.

After this turn of training, Athulf's stats should match any of those NPC's.  If Athulf had a better spear, I'm confident he could win one of the den fights if we wanted to go more lucrative.

Also, since we're allowed to push ludus/staff upgrades earlier in the turn, here's one:

Staff Hire: Chiurgeon Contract
Quote
Looking at Obelix's recent injury, who knew there'd be so much blood in bloodsport?  House Magnus should use our fame to attract the services of a skilled chiurgeon (surgeon).

The contract should be specified as such: Chiurgeon will round daily at the ludus to provide medical examination and care for all House Magnus personnel as needed, including non-gladiators.  Furthermore, chiurgeon will attend all gladiatorial matches to provide pre-fight preparation and post-fight care.  Chiurgeon will remain a freelance contractor unless otherwise agreed upon, and is therefore free to service other clients so long as his daily duties with House Magnus are fulfilled.

TLDR: spend a fame token to get a medical dood.

So I'm being nerdy here, but I made him a contractor rather than a full time employee.  We really shouldn't need a 24/7 fully qualified doc, so you'd think a we'd get a better doc if we stated we only needed him part time.  "I just stitched you up, go eat two olives, and I'll see you in the morning."  That might also give us some room to slip in medical care for family members if roleplay shenanigans start happening.

Having a full-time doc would mean we could train our aspiring gladiators harder, since we can attend any injuries which occur during training easily. But by far the biggest advantage of having a doctor as a full-time employee, aside from being able to look after our family, is loyalty. We don't need to worry about said doctor talking to the Flavians.

On the other hand...

If they're a contractor, we can arrange for them to visit the Flavian camp at some point.

Juuuust saying...

I feel like there's far better methods of spying on the Flavians that don't expose vital employees to them.

House Magnus is hiring! Upon the realizationthat it may be a good idea to keep a medical staff on hand, for the ludus. Said Chiurgeon will be a full time staff member,  and alsohelp out the family mrmbers as needed.

Former military staff preferred.

Mettius Tuccius Frontinus: A medicus who was interested in the offer granted, he claims to have started his work mainly treating accidents and illness on board a ship that a merchant had used for trade across the Mare Nostrum. He did this for a few years before finding a much richer paying job for a group of explorers/cartographers who he had worked with for seventeen years, traveling with them to distant lands of barbarians, and Persians for a coupe of years before going back to more barbarian lands. Again, they mostly treated illnesses, however a few conflicts happened with his band and he was to treat the wounds they occasionally got. However, about two years ago, while he and the group he worked in was to the far north east, a series of events lead to the bands destruction, and the death of about half the band, with the other half only alive thanks to his work. Since then, he's mostly been getting money with one time payment work of healing gladiators and the sick, though was looking for more secure work in terms of payment, and while he may not be from the military and is a bit on the old side, he isn't weak or frail, likely from all the years of long traveling...

Could we hold off on the token voting until the action phase? We don't lose anything by being patient on that front. Also, we can't book into a fight position that's already taken, like that 2v1. Not without having to spend a token on that at least.
