In which case, cabbage shouldn't be the thing we're deifying. It really should be spiked balls, since their base value is 126☼ compared to the minuscule base value of 4☼ for cabbage. Plus, spiked balls have quality levels, so their value can be pushed up to 1512☼ for masterworks.

You are giving me ideas. Terrible ideas. I call this one the Cabbage Challenge. The rules follow:

• Embark as normal, but without any seeds or food. Forbid all food and drink for cooking and brewing.
  In the interests of enabling dwarven alcoholism, cave wheat seeds can be brought to grow into cave wheat, which can then be brewed into alcohol.
  
• Look around the map for any cabbage growing on the surface to gather them. If there is none, abandon fort and start over.
• Under the Kitchen menu, allow cabbage for cooking. That is going to be the only food your dwarves are allowed to eat and grow.
• Cabbage roasts are the only thing you're allowed to sell to caravans.
• Atomsmash any non-cabbage food items.
