Actually, most of the time there are indeed at least one or two squares where you can channel from above. It may be a small level but still not uniformly smaller in every direction.
And I don't think the bottoms actually have any particular tendency to be small levels - I'll change my mind if you embark on a random sample of a couple dozen magma pipes and measure them all.

Just saw this, and it's very much what my current fort is slowly building up to be.

A word about it, though: if you plan to fill a very large space with magma you need to channel out more than a one-tile wide space for it flow out of. Otherwise it will spread and 'evaporate' faster than a large area will fill..

Bonus: If ya make it so that all access to the Abyss section is only possible through one central pillar that doubles as storage. All other areas would be on satellite pillars.

Make the pillar inside the drained volcano and open up every z-level from the now-drained pipe, so when you get bored you can close any drainage to the chasm and let the abyss slowly fill with sweet fiery death. Also the bubbling of in the pipe would add a nice effect.

Do you propose to have the floor of the abyss level be the sea of magma?

How'd you do it then? bottom of those pipes are usually the smallest, so it's nearly impossible to do the ol' "Channel out a square" trick. I can figure out how to deconstruct it with the loss of -1- dwarf, but no fewer than that.

Code: [Select]
##############
##.....##~~~##
##....#F~~~~~#
.......#~~~~~#
##.....##~~~##
##############

# are walls
~ is the magma pipe
F is a smoothed wall, which will be carved into a fortification.

Magma flows diagonally slower then it flows horizontally, so your engraver should have enough time to get out of there before the magma pours through.

Hmm... I've never had a problem with fortifications through the cardinal directions. Although, I only have breached the magma pipe from the first few top levels before.

that's one of the rules. you MUST have a roiling sea of magma at the bottom. AN ENTIRE Z LEVEL! AT LEAST!

Someone should make the 'underworld', totally free of civilization. Topmost layer should have a maze of tunnels with various aboveground entrances, so sieges are difficult and unpredictable, and immigrants can still get in.

Then abandon, play for a few years in another fort to let the tower caps grow, and give out the save for a reclaim. Like I said, with no existing fortressness to it.

Maybe. But I thought of a possible way of getting rid of the outer rock layer, so you wouldn't even need access to the surface.

Build up ramps on one layer, then down ramps just above them. I -think- it's possible. I'm not 100% positive it'd create an underground path though >_>

ok thats what i assumed but for some reason it sounded like there would be a floor under which would be the magma

Well... I guess you could theoretically channel out the very very bottom, thus creating an infinite bottomless pit... but that wouldn't let you have your roiling sea of magma...

IIRC you can't do that.
