Just curious, but does toady plan to implement slavery?

I'm not saying Dwarves would have slaves, but humans would definately have slaves.  :-\

They already do. Just open Legends and see for yourself.
(This isn't a Suggestion by the way, should probably move your thread unless you have actual ideas on how to expand the, currently barebones, use of slaves amongst the slave owning civs).

Uh, no it was just a question. I only asked because i'd never seen slaves in the game.

I wasn't sure where to put this.

DF General Discussion should be OK. Alternatively you could ask a question directly to Toady in the Future of the Fortress thread. Take a browse of the various development notes pages (links at top of Suggestions page) first as there's quite a bit there that may cover slavery.

You can often run into escaping slaves and prisoners during a revolution if you happen to wander in to a town during Adventurer. Slaves also turn up as visitors from time to time to drink in your tavern. For erm...whatever reason... :)

not really suggestion forum material, would've been better to post it in general discussion as its not really suggesting anything new.

however i can tell you this much:
The basics of a slavery system are there already but in name onĺy. I.E. the "profession" already exists and civs that have [ETHIC:SLAVERY:ACCEPTABLE] in the raws will enslave when conquering sites in war.
However currently, they don't do anything, so slavery is just for flavor right now.

As to whether Toady has plans to expand the system; if humans ever become Fort Mode playable, Toady may expand the functionality. Though knowing his avoidance of "icky" topics in the game does not bode well for the chances of a well-detailed slavery system.

It's a fun topic when properly executed, but i wouldn't expect much.

Im not suprised you haven't seen any. I barely see them, and i have a warmongering "slaver" civ modded into the game. They almost never have even a single one, even when they go absolutely mental with wars. I gen several new worlds every day as part of my mod testing, btw.

Captured historical (and assumedly) nonhistorical populations are siezed when they raid a site and relocated, though i don't think this is possible when actually playing and doing the raiding yourself in fortress mode as a added circumstance, just world generation battles. And post-generation when in active play all sides take prisoners.
  • Prisoners are very quickly assimilated rather than held onto by slave-owning civs, its only really the ones who don't like keeping slaves that will wait for prisoners to die or indefinitely hold them, i think the actual slave profession has been turned off by Toady or otherwise tweaked/bugged to be inactive else.
If and when Toady expands the scope of the races availible in the game (testing the water surrouding the magic arc procedural races) we might see more specialised other race functions, whereas at the moment we can just mod to play other races but see it through a slightly dwarf-centric lense. Toady has said he doesn't want to do anything particular for goblins like child kidnapping raiding missions until we're actually to that point in development where it would be worthwhile and not only seen by modders.

I believe some similar questions popped up on the Future of the Fortress thread, maybe it'd be worth dropping a question there.

It might actually be possible if you're playing a civ with slavery ethics. Would need to test it.
My current modded civ will happily make gruesome structures out of enemy remains and impale them on stakes after a successful raid from a player fortress thanks to their adjusted ethics.

Although I haven't seen anyone take prisoners after taking over a site, so perhaps it'd be the same.

I would think it would be related to pillaging, since that's what they often do, conquering a site does give pillaging rewards back but only on unit retrieval with a messenger. In some odd workaround way it might revolve around "rescuing" people displaced after the fighting, ill have to test that myself too, i have some modded gamefiles that'd be suitable if i can just get a fortress rolling.

Law and better Economics might have to be dealt with before a correct implementation of slavery.

Yeah, this. Either the Law release or the Economy release.

Actually not really.  The probable reason that slavery's implementation is so thin at present is because there is no information stored on the social status of non-historical characters in general.  That means the game can (and does) enslave historical characters since their status is tracked but there can be no large slave populations because that would require the tracking of the social status of non-historicals.

So it needs the society and law arc for establishing the position of slaves (and other social classes) in a civ and the economy to make civs make reasonable decisions over why they need/don't need slavery.

That and demon kings who'll enslave other races just because they know it'll piss off other civs. Gotta keep in mind the fantasy world setting.

No, the society and law arc for slaves is already in.  No further development of the society and law is actually needed to add slavery into the game, what is lacking is simply the ability to have non-historical characters have social status like historical characters presently do.  Toady One could quite easily add that function in and then use it simply for slaves, there is strictly speaking no need to further expand on social classes in general at the same time.

I imagine the society and law arc ("Starting Scenarios") will be when social positions for pops are added. Unless Toady suddenly decides they're essential for making villains work. But he seems to have that sorted now.
