Most veteran players don't bat an eye at all the 'wonderful' stuff that happens in a Dwarf Fortress campaign.
If ya think about the lore of the game being played, a lot of weird and disturbing things happen before and/or during FUN .

These have actually happened in my forts ... imagine this happening in a real life setting.

1: a dwarf shook the hand of a goblin so hard, he broke the bones.

2: a dwarven child is out playing in the fields, all of a sudden a goblin wielding an iron whip runs out of the woods, and hits the kid up side the head. The skull is caved in and kills the poor youngling.

3: A troll rips the leg off of a live kitten.

4: an elf merchant is setting up shop next to a dwarven settlement - all of a sudden dozens of dwarfs run towards him,  arms full of animal guts.

5: a baby dwarf falls into the lake with it's mother standing nearby ... the mother stands there and watches her child drown.

6: a woodcutter is mad because he had gotten wet during a rain storm - he precedes to hack apart a dwarven child standing next to him.

Probably every time I've spent I don't know how many ticks trying to hack off the head of a giant or cyclops with an axe or sword, only to not manage to do it before my target bled out. Every time I think about it I get this image of my adventurer hacking wildly with a crazy look in their eyes. Thinking maybe this will be the time they finally get to take a head back rather than just the skull.

Or maybe that time with one of my first adventurers (overall goal at the time was to take two artifact spears that had slain minotaurs from an ettin that killed the original wielders and made the spears family heirlooms. I encountered a hostile dwarf wandering the hills and after a skirmish, I had him downed and was repeatedly bashing his head with my shield. Had time to stab and even cut off the poor dwarf's ear during it. Until eventually (finally) the head gave way and the dwarf died. That had to be a nightmare for that guy.

My epic badass vampire human outsider was merrily murderering bandits when a lucky blow severed nerves in his hand. With his remaining good hand, he killed all but the one who had injured him. Then I chased him until he collapsed from exhaustion. While he was down, I savagely and deliberately broke pretty much everything but his spine and legs.

Then I rested til morning, tracked him down, and chased him again, to the point of exhaustion.

Again and again I ran him down and pounded bone splinters into smaller and smaller shards. Each day a little worse. Sever a finger here, gouge out an eye there. But let him heal, let him rest, and do it all again tomorrow. That goblin took five days to die.

Then I went into town and murdered a child, and used his corpse to kill his parents and whole village. Then I kept the body for further murder shenanigans.

The mental image I have is of a gore-encrusted, wild eyed, feral vampire with a spear in one hand, and his other limp and useless hand locked permanently around the ankle of a battered, decaying child's body that he drags behind him like Pyramid Head and his knife, shambling into a village and eyeing everyone with an unsettling and insane stare.

He opens his cracked, dry lips, fetid gorebreath coiling foully out his cursed fangs, and speaks the only words he remembers, "Losing is fun."

Well, we could put two and two together and write a book: "The Shit that Hans and Max Did: You Won't Believe This Shit."
He's fucking with us.

What about that one goblin invader that remarked something like, "A few minutess ago I drowned." "I drowned! This is terrifying!"

And then he drowned. I'm reasonably certain his name wasn't "Ben".

Reminds me of that one time I build a drowning chamber, only with a twist,

I typed into DFHack
Code: [Select]
repeat -name suffer -time 3 -timeUnits days -command [ full-heal -r -all ]  Lead everyone in, then flooded the chamber.

What's worse than drowning in the drowning trap?   Drowning a few dozen times in a drowning trap.

It's only a little anecdote. I remember that in my fortress there was a baroness dwarf woman who lived in a luxury bedroom. For a few weeks she disappeared and nobody knew where she was. A vampyr had drained her blood while she was dreaming.
One day, her corpse was found by a dwarf who got into her bedroom. In his memories, I could see that he felt unconfortable to see a corpse but also he was satisfied by sleeping in a luxury bed.
He slept with a dead in order to sleep in a great bedroom! What a such miserable dwarf!
