I did a 'clean all' command, and waited. No beasts showed up, and more kittens bleed to death.  My breeding stock of cats is going to die of old age pretty soon. Guess the dwarfs will have to eat a few elves for fresh meat  :o

I wouldn't eat kitten meat covered with sludge... Nor call it a "fresh meat". You can put the newborn animals into cages, which should prevent syndromes, and then release them when adult (or even wait an additional year, so they are fattened up and more resilient). I think it is a good alternative to elves, which are probably not edible anyway, not to mention hard to breed.

Another possibility: is your fort in a "Scorching" region? Long exposure to such heat can melt fat and cause bleeding (which, again, smaller creatures might not be able to survive).
Temperate climate, with freezing winter weather.
What flag would 'sludge' be under ?

I'm guessing that is for removing stuff from the cat, and not inflicting disease.

My dwarves like full grown cats - they are easy to raise, and provide many bones for bolts .

Penning all my kittens stopped the mass death ... too bad a forgotten beast rampaged through my fortress and ... displaced ... all my dwarfs

Since you were using dfhack, you could have used show-unit-syndromes.

It can't be spiders because cats kill insects. Plus dwarves or animals being bitten or stung by vermin creates an announcement and I think OP would have noticed "The Stray Cat (Tame) has been bitten by a brown recluse spider!" notifications popping up left and right.

IE_SYNDROME_TAG:SYN_INGESTED actually is for triggering syndromes by licking substances removed by the interaction. It "indicates that cleaning off materials will activate their syndromes if they have this flag". In general, SYN_INGESTED means that ingesting a substance will trigger its syndrom.
