Design Proposal: Vulpes' Withering Blast EDIT

It gets cold for a lonely mage at night, so we've developed many ways to remedy that. One is the creation of heat. By using a small bit of mana as a catalyst our mages can heat a pocket of air in their hands. While any mage worth his salt knows to keep the temperature radiating from their palm at a bearable level, further analysis by our Mageineers has discovered that it is possible to heat a "bubble" (contained by a very simple use of mana not much different from Barrier) of air to insanely hot temperatures, and thanks to our experiences with Palm of Light, we've begun the practice of projecting the heat away from our palms. The heatball can be harmlessly diffused in-palm or "thrown" where it will either burst on contact or burst when the envelope containing the heatball fails. To get a bigger blast, the mage can spend mana to funnel in extra air into the bubble before heating to form a hyper-compressed ball of air to heat, which is heated to the same point as the normal bubble..

The heat suddenly released from the ball should be enough to cause up to second and third degree burning and ignite more flammable materials.

It's late and I'm overly defensive, but they only both explode in the same way that a rifle and a HMG both fire bullets.

A suitable metaphor to the modes of explosions are a hammerstrike vs a hydraulic press.

Also, it remains hot a lot longer. Its still not a great incendiary, but it should cause second and 3rd degree burns which should get around fulcrum armor.

Its also removes oxygen from the air. You just need to hit _near_ the opening on a pillbox to choke people inside and if it actually gets inside people has the choice between choking or leaving it. The shell has its own oxidizer and has no such effects.

It also leaves a vacuum after the blastwave which might also get around fulcrum, and which does really nasty things to internal organs.
I know too little about explosives to tell you why this happens in particular with the fireball mode of explosion, but it does.


EDIT: every time I say "might get around fulcrum", I actually mean: as far as I can see it should, but I'm neither physics expert nor GM

I prefer mud rune, nothing like the earth opening up under your feet and swallowing someone whole to inspire fear (I know this isnt what it does, yet).  It will hurt a little for now and offers a good range of possibilities in the future.

Rune of mud seems like a rather bad idea to me. First off even if it works perfectly it means that anywhere they deploy their mages our ability to advance is greatly reduced if not out right removed. Second off it relies on water which means if they want to remove the mud they just need to boil it off. Which they have a head start on due to their flame starter spell. The grab bag of fire spells seem to be overthinking the problem. In their armor design it's noted shotguns are effective against it so why don't we make an improved shotgun. Doing so would help counter their armor and reduce the firepower gap, since I doubt a fireball is more effective at killing mooks then a rifle.

Stormhammer(enchantment)
Many still doubt the utility of mages saying that in the near future machines will replace us all. They forget however that by being a mage we can achieve thing quite literally impossible for others. The rather ambitiously named stormhammer is a blow-forward semi-auto shotgun. To a mugglenonmage this weapon would be impossible as the force of a full size shotgun round would render the blow-forward operation unusable. However enchantments draw kinetic energy from the weapon and redirects them into the barrel speeding up the projectiles and gasses. Once nothing is in contact with the barrel the enchantment deactivates and the left over recoil along side what energy the enchantment couldn't redirect cycles the weapon. This system reduces the energy letting the unlocked action cycle safely and in addition reduces the recoil of the weapon. Due to our mages doubts about "Lil' Mannlichers first guide to gunsmithing" the weapon is design to be simple with a fixed firing pin and being feed by a fixed 5 round box mag(which may or may not be an enlarged Weisz-Vaszary mag).

An anti-armor gun is the worst option we can pick to deal with their armor, because then we have a situation where each of our sides have guns that can kill each others’ mages, except wouldn’t you know it, theirs has a much larger range and is more accurate.

Accordingly, I’ll shift to the fire/heat ball if the Stormhammer starts to gain traction.
