My motto idea is "Magia e Scienza unite per la Vittoria", which according to Google Translate, is "Magic and Science united for Victory".

Fulcrum Armour, V2:
Fulcrum Armour has incredible potential; it taking a little extra work is acceptable. Our first priority is increasing the coverage and durability.
For coverage we shall, alas, abandon the flowing robes of our forefathers, in favour of a more modern form. Resembling a standard trenchcoat, albeit with the addition of a deep hood and a facemask, the new model should prove a lot more practical. The addition of a hood lends an air of mystery, setting our mages apart from the common soldier, as well as increasing protection, obviously.
To improve durability, a number of thin steel wires will be added to the weave, to bear the brunt of the stress as force is redirected. These should not make the coat significantly harder to move in, whilst still increasing durability to the point where a single bullet is not enough to shred the entire coat.
Improving mana efficiency and adding a 'stand-by' mode will be tackled in the future.

Revision: Fulcrum Armour, V2 (2) [Hard]

Version 2 of the Fulcrum Armor includes weaving thin steel wires throughout the fabric to assist in stress handling and force redirection, as well as changing the Armor from a simple cloak to a hooded trenchcoat and facemask.

We fail to incorporate steel wires (attempting to add a spool of steel wire to the factory loom resulted in a rather disastrous malfunction), but we do switch to a trenchcoat.  This represents a tactical advantage over the previous iteration through the use of sleeves, and the facemask (currently just the collar snapped up to go over the nose) should help cover up more of the Mage's exposed bits.  The open bottom of the coat represents a vulnerability to upward attacks such as from landmines, but due to the way the Armor works a shrapnel attack such as that would be lethal regardless.

Design Phase, Turn -1

Our design team proudly presents the new emblem for the 208th Abbraccio Mage Support Alpha Company!  The BOLD and multi-faceted shield represents our drive to defend our country, as well as our historical basis in Venice and magical prowess!  The emblem is carefully painted onto the door to our conference room, along with our company designation.  The hasty paper sign has been replaced, and moral is up! (+1 Die)

Additionally, we've come up with a kick-ass motto that the 208th will stand by.  "Magia e Scienza unite per la Vittoria"; roughly translated to mean "Magic and Science Combined for Victory" - or more simply, "Together for Victory".  Spirits are up, and the team works harder than ever to develop magical weapons for our proud country.  (+1 Die)

Lastly, we have presented a new flag to King Gioffe II for his approval.  The Chevroned Cross is a truly impressive flag, and before we can even get into the symbolism of all the details he approves it.  King Gioffe II quickly places an order for the flag to be mass-produced and distributed throughout the kingdom.  Our Political Standing has Improved.

It is now the Design Phase.

Evocation: Hardened Air

An Evocation focused on turning the air into a wall using molecular compression via magical energy. By replicating the makeup of diamond structure in a wall of air, we can block shots fired at us, as well as anything else that tries to pass it.

It can be conjured in a wall ahead, or in the form of a dome. Requires 1 Diamond and an Air Source. Thankfully, the air around us qualifies; and the diamond is just for handy reference for how the magic should shape the air, and is not used up.

Note that the Dome variety does not allow movement, but the wall variant does allow itself to be moved to the caster's will, including raising it, moving it forward or down into or onto the ground, or simply the caster moving while the wall is kept up in it's current position.

Anyway, communications:

Thaumic Radio:
Radio is, at this point, a well understood technology. Minor advancements are being made every year, making it ever more powerful and portable. Who knows, perhaps a few decades from now there will be radios you can hold in your hand? Unfortunately, war is not going to wait. We could really use such hand-held radios right now. And with magic, we can have them!
The Thaumic Radio operates in a manner closely resembling a standard radio; it transmits using conventional radio waves, the amplitude of which is modulated to encode a signal. However, the way in which said waves are generated, and the source of power, is different. Instead of using an inefficient and bulky vacuum tubes, the Thaumic Radio does it by magic. More specifically, it contains an engraved cylinder which is connected to the 1 meter long collapsible antenna, which is enchanted to replicate the effects of a radio transmitter. A similar cylinder acts as a receiver. A microphone, speaker, and some dials to adjust settings complete the package. The whole thing shouldn't be much larger than a brick.
As it requires mana to operate, the Thaumic Radio can only be used by mages. However, since it transmits and receives regular radio waves, it is fully compatible with conventional radios, such as those used by the army and navy.

This shouldn't require us to requisition a radio first, since we're not actually building a radio- we just need to Understand how radios work, which is publicly available knowledge.

CW suggested we only start one design this turn, and start thinking about project progress and fixing existing projects. Which seems reasonable. Certainly we want to have at least some new tech finished by turn 1, so we can be at least marginally useful.

Design (Evocation): Translucent Radio

Communication is a vital asset in combat. When a magineer hppened to "feel" mana being emitted during an experiment (a highly coincidental occurance when not intended), we realized that mana could be used to fulfill the role of communication.

Translucent Radio takes advantage of the versatality of mana to allow for communication between two mages. When casting, it sends out tiny bursts of mana in the air. With the knowledge of this evocation, other mages will be able to feel these pulses.
For now, communication will be done in morse code and pre-determined codes for common phrases. This way, we don't have to engineer turning mana waves into voice -- we just have to send out a short/long burst every X seconds or X miliseconds and have the mages be trained in morse code. Costs are hoped to be down, due to the binary burst nature of the spell.

In a way, Translucent Radio could be compared to the Snap Lighter spell. Except it's emitting mana instead of mana->fire, and the mage times their casting to form a coherent pattern.

An evocation-based communication spell would be insanely useful. No use of budget, no need to be put in loadouts, and more. We can use eperience in light-bending from Galilei Lensing once that's done in order to revise this to use radio waves and work with the army's radios. We can revise it to work with speech later.
The "translucent air" sorcery design proposal from last turn is probably worse than thaumic radio. But the value of an evocation communication spell cannot be understated.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Here is my revision idea if we make the Thaumic Radio
Directed radio
Radio is light, at least according to scientists, we know how to redirect light from the creation of the Galilei Lensing, so the next step is obvious, using metal cones around the antenna and a modified Galilei Lensing in the receiving end to only work on radio, we can allow a radio communication much safer from outside intersaption or reading.

Guys,

I feel like we are definitely overthinking the communications barrier with magic radio.
Why don't we just modify the crystal memory mind spell to put an image in someone-else's eye?

Actually, I think it would be best to just put the image in the monocle instead of the eye, and then have a system of linked monocles that share the image whenever someone looks through them.
