Would you watch a stream of Dwarf Fortress on Twitch?
« on: December 25, 2018, 12:35:04 am »

I recently got into streaming and have been considering streaming Dwarf Fortress in fortress mode. Before I check to see if this is a possibility, would anyone be willing to watch it? I would be using Lazy Newb Pack with a tileset and likely would provide a link to the game world I am using as well as an image of that world. At some point down the line I will narrate what the stream but lack the ability to do so right now. I would also change the world each new major stable release of Dwarf Fortress and the subsequent Lazy New Pack.

Should enough interest be shown in the community, I will dedicate a topic to the stream. Any thoughts or ideas?

I would watch if there's at least more than just DF like a bit of DWARVEN HUMOR+5 and involvement of other random entertaining crap Kobold pit fighting.

I would not as I can't imagine anything more boring, but there are many people who post about their twitch streams over at the Reddit forum, so it is apparently something people enjoy.

I just tried to do a test to see if I can even stream it and ran into some issues. I use player.me as my OBS and when in use it will make Dwarf Fortress have an almost completely black screen with only a few other large pixels in some spots. If player.me is closed, it will leave dwarf fortress in an unplayable state where the colors are completely wrong and all of the pixels as large random squares.

I tried to do some research into this, but have not found an answer yet. I would appreciate any advice from anyone with experience.

It's proly related to DF using openGL. I work on an open source application(Krita), which uses opengl, and we had a lot of people come in with trouble streaming through OBS because OBS has trouble recording OpenGL screens. The problem should go away when using either something called 'game mode' in OBS, or by changing the drawing mode to something else, so DF won't be using openGL.

Some people do watch DF streams. People like Vinesauce Joel and Quill18 get a lot of viewers, but I kinda agree with Shonai. DF footage is pretty boring unless you make use of heavy editing (like Kruggsmash) or are just very funny to listen to.

I am not entirely sure how to change the drawing mode in Dwarf Fortress or Lazy Newb Pack. Googling it did not yield any results sadly. Also thank you for giving me a step in the right direction.

Edit: This might be getting a bit off topic so I think I will post that last inquiry in a different section as I think I would be better off asking it somewhere else.

I've just recently started watching a few people's streams of DF. Things I've noticed and why I've already stopped:

- Texture packs make the game a bit more visually stimulating for the audience.
- Soundsense likewise makes for a better viewing experience - however you'll need to disable cancelled task sounds otherwise your stream is unbearable.
- Having a good understanding of the game is valuable, as I think a good amount of viewers would be interested in learning new strategies.
- Having a basic understanding of the game is necessary. I watched someone press C over and over because of the red C in the corner - (combat 'r'eports.) This was enough for me to be done.
- DF is not an interesting visual game - the interesting bits are in the absurd events, unique designs, and the stories you make. Brew up a story/purpose for a fort and work toward that. It gives the video some direction and would help keep an audience.
- DF has long-long times of nothing at all. You need to find a way to fill that time. Either discussions, examining an already exported legends file, or something. But know when you'll have down-time and how to fill it.
- To that point, make sure your FPS can take it. Slowdown is frustrating for the player but is an interest killer for the viewer.
- Adventure mode is fun - but super boring.

Hope that helps, mate.

Vinesauce Joel does it, people enjoy it (including me).  I don't see why you shouldn't or can't.

Thank you. I very much appreciate the tips. I do plan to narrate what I am doing, why I am doing it and my thoughts in general. Hopefully I have enough charisma to make it interesting.

Good luck, dude. Send me a message when you're planning to stream. If I'm free, I'll tune in, or watch the archives.

Irritating not only on livestreams; any way to disable this full stop? Or actually a threshold would be good i.e. only play that annoying flute blow every x minutes?

The solution would be something like this, but you'd have to find the one for cancelled tasks:
I give you an easy tutorial, when I get home. give me an hour

Open up: soundsense\packs\default

there is a file called "sample.xml"
open it up with Notepad ++ or even the build in windows notepad.

look for the sound log pattern I quoted.

Code: [Select]
<sound logPattern="(.+): (.+)">
      <soundFile fileName="85791__sandyrb__NATIVE_FLUTE_FIGURE_02.wav" randomBalance="true">
         <attribution url="http://www.freesound.org/people/sandyrb/sounds/85791/" license="CC BY 3.0" author="sandyrb" description="NATIVE FLUTE FIGURE 02.wav" />
      </soundFile>
   </sound>

change it to:
Code: [Select]
<sound logPattern="(.+): (.+)">
     </sound>

the flute will be gone!

Thanks Bumber, in the meantime I just renamed the flute wave file, but I'll have a peek at the XML now. Just renaming/removing the flute wave file meant it fell back to a range of other cancellation sounds.
