One just stole a legendary artifact... is it gone for good?

in 43.x i had kea man stealing some stuff, found them later in adventure mode, still hauling the stuff. they were visible as * near the fort on the map in adv mode, not going anywhere. not sure if normal keas are treated the same, but why shouldn't they - the creature's sentience is irrelevant here, I think. also, it's an artifact and should be tracked even better. not sure what if the kea dies of old age though. the artifact will be listed as lost in the region i suppose.

just had the same thing in my 44.12 fort, but the adventurer isn't there yet.

Try to save and check the location of the artifact in legends if possible. I would be interested to know the results.

YES.

Also now I want to write an epic adventure that begins with a priceless artifact being stolen by an asshole bird.

I recall from the dev diaries circa the artifacts update that Toady made artifact-thieving animals turn into historical figures on exiting the map, so that their possession of the artifact could be tracked. Whether or not you can find them again I'm less sure.

Maybe you should check your local Kea store for a replacement artifact? It'll be cheap but you'll have to assemble it yourself.

(I'm sorry)

Presumably the artifact is in the wilderness (the region the creature escaped the map into) at a random location. If it's a really small region, you might be able to search it in adventure mode. If the bird really is a historical figure, it should show up in the travel map as an asterisk, and you should be able to find it in adventure mode.
