The Northmen have a long and tumultuous past. Long ago they belonged to a great tribe and were multitude. They lived long lives, fishing and hunting to sustain themselves, and knew not want. Then came the dark years. A dark cloud erupted from the earth, and a terrible dust rained down upon the earth. The fields had gone sour, and the crops withered from disease long before the harvest time. The forests had gone silent, the game left for distant pastures, and the river ran black, clogged with dank murk. The ancient tribesmen knew well which god had cursed them, Volcanous, the Ancient Fire. With little food, but resolve abound, the ancient tribe had but one option, confront the angry god.
In the years that followed, the weak were culled from the tribe as they journeyed far to the north. The journey was long, and full of hardships. Friends and family were lost as starvation, disease, and the elements laid claim to the weak. All hope seemed lost as the approached the distant volcano, many seasons journey from their tropical homeland. And upon seeing its grandeur, a cascade of molten rock, flowing from the mountain range, they truly abandoned hope.
It was in that autumn that the god Pyres appeared before them. They, the god of ice and winter, had once ruled over this land. Yet Volcanous had risen forth from deep within the earth, thawing the ice and creating a fertile volcanic swamp, much to the fury of Pyres. Pyres spent ages casting blizzard after blizzard upon the land, but could make no headway in refreezing the thawed earth. Alone the god could not reclaim these lands, but with the resolve of these travelers, perhaps he could retake some of his territory. And thus the Northmen made a bargain with the spiteful god. The god would gift them his children, giant dogs of pure snow and ice, so long as they slew the titan which dwelled within the fire mountain. Eager to gain the favor of the god, they accepted and readied themselves for war.
When the time came, the northmen mounted the Snow Beasts, and rode winter across the land. Behind them, a frost settled and the earth froze solid. Only upon reaching the fire mountain did the god's magic falter. With a massive eruption, the god Volcanous met them on the battlefield. For weeks the riders battled with the beast, and the land was drenched in blood. Only with the sacrifice of a brave soul, who rode into the heart of the volcano to pierce the god's heart, did the fighting finally end.
The rider, who's name has been lost to time, struck at the god's heart, but could not deliver a fatal blow. The fires of the volcano consumed him, and yet, he emerged from the volcano. His skin a pale white, but his hair, a fiery red. This hero called upon the god Pyres, and brokered a deal between the two gods. The lands would be split between the two gods, with half the year belonging to Volcanous, and half the year belonging to Pyres. The Northmen would remain in these lands eternal, and guard this agreement, so that the two gods could never betray the agreement.
After deliberation, the gods agreed, though Pyres was furious that his mortals had turned against him. Moments after agreeing, he withdrew his protection from the northmen. The snowbeasts thawed to reveal giant riding dogs beneath, and the mortal's snow white hair was tinted with fiery reds. The mortal hero, his protection gone, burned to death in the heart of the volcano. With his death, the place of the Northmen was solidified for time immemorial, as keepers of the seasons.
