The knightess said nothing, only sighed softly.

Few seconds passed until the door opened slightly and an elderly man, with pointy hat, and curved, shiny, grey beard poked his head out. He eyed all of the group and each one by one, before squinting.

"Guests or buyers? I have no time for the former." His voice was akin to a squeak.

"We're a caravan of traveling merchants and their guards. Knowing how dangerous traveling can get, we would like to buy some vulneraries." Johannes smiled as easily as breathing.

Venza watches curiously. A mage of some sort?

"Oh, come on right in then!" He opened the door wide for his new clients.

What would be main hall of a house was instead cluttered with shelves and boxes. Several items were on display, including few tomes that both Johannes and Venza recognized as spellbooks. Oddier items, like polished skulls, jars of unknown substances and woodcarved figurines were also in plain view.

Lodewik made his way behind a small counter he had set opposite from the door; behind him, few chests, with heavy padlocks, were sitting on a table.

"Vulneraries! Spellbooks! Fertility idols! Lodewik the Great has them all!" His stock - excluding various mundane items and curiosities - was limited and of some quality.

The price tags, however...

The Princess watched the strange pendant with interest; it was a square granite pebble, polished into shine, with strange black-ink etchings around its edges, hanging on a leather string.

"Sir, can I ask about this pendant?"

"Ahhh! The pendant? I've chanced upon it in Sterlitz, where a collector of trinkets, in trouble with debtors, has begun selling away his curiosities and jewelry! True a stroke of luck for such an entrepreneur like Lodewik, yes yes! So I've bought it, and now I'm selling it away for profits, because what's a merchant who doesn't sell anything?"

"I will tell you, it's the necklace that once belonged to Sigurd the Mighty, son of Sigismund himself! Look at the etchings in Old Herzgottian Runic script! Legend has it, little Sigurd got this pendant from Sigismund as birthday present, and had it since childhood, and its magic made Sigurd into that tall, strong giant that every legend speaks of! Bending iron bars, lifting cows!"

"Ooh..." The old scholar chuckled, seeing Sophia's reaction.

"You like it, miss?"

"It's a bit costly, however..."

"Just for you, I will drop the price by twenty coins!" The Princess gasped.

"Really? You will? Wonderful! That is so nice of you. I'm sure Joachim will love it! May Sister Kato bless you, mister Lodewik." The Princess stopped, however, and looked expectantly at Priscilla, wordlessly 'asking' her knight to buy the pendant for her.

"Hmm." Seemingly lost in thought, Johannes rested his finger on his chin.

"I suggest that in addition to the pendant, we buy a vulnerary or two. How does that sound, Priscilla?" Johannes looked expectantly at the knight.

Can't say I trust this man when he says it's such a powerful item... he might be a charlatan. But it doesn't seem dangerous... and if the princess wants it that badly, who am I to say no? Johannes thought.

"Honestly, we already have some Vulnerary on us. If we just bought 1 we could also buy the Shield Ring he has. Such items are a rare sight."

Priscilla regarded the man - and his wares - with a cautious eye.
"How did a Sterlitzian trinket collector end up with what would be one of their holiest artefacts?"

"The shield ring is rare enough, if it's genuine, and we're loaded to the gills with healing materials already."

Examine the Shield Ring for any Cracks or defects. A bit cheerfully.

"Good business sense probably. Expensive it may be, he does make a profit out here selling to travelers."


"Where else have you traveled?" he asks curiously.

Rowan responds to the commotion and the merchant's words towards the Princess with uneasy silence before he speaks in a whispered tone towards his companions.

"... Ring and a vulnerary at most, then we get out. We shouldn't aim for more with these prices, we only need to keep afloat until the next town. Don't like the pendant, but if she wants it, there's not much we can do... Except hoping the next town offers a better present that will catch her eyes even more."

Johannes looked at Sophia. "...What do you think? I agree with Priscilla that it's probably not the powerful item he says it is, but if you still want it..."
