1.)  Will dwarves actually store mugs in containers?  If I make mugs so that they don't have to guzzle their booze straight from the barrel, they will use them, but they will either drop them right near the barrel, unless I have a goblet stockpile nearby, in which case they will eventually get returned.  However, they will not store them in a container or cabinet in the dining hall, which I was led to believe they would by the Wiki.  I'm perfectly fine having a goblets-only stockpile in the dining hall, as I use stockpile customization heavily anyway, but was just curious if it was necessary.

2.)  On the stocks screen, items will be marked F if they are forbidden, but some Fs are bright and some Fs are dim.  What's the difference?  I think the Melt indicator does this too, bright or dark.

3.)  I was under siege by the undead for over a year, but my fort was sealed tight and self sufficient, so surviving was not difficult even if we were locked out of the mines for a bit.  The siege is over but during it I went through no less than 5 strange moods and had to resort to slaughtering two puppies and a baby piglet to provide emergency leather.  This less a question than a confession.  (The puppy would have been trained as a war dog as soon as he reached maturity, the piglet was going to become bacon anyway, but I wait for them to grow for greater returns.)  Also, it's a bit funny to look in the pantry and see Puppy Tallow (4).

4.)  If dwarves are working outside in harsh environments, like tundra, are they smart enough to get back inside before they expire if it's easily accessible?  I'm recovering all of the bodies and equipment from said siege, but we're in the middle of the arctic, and there is a lot to recover...

Provided my fortress lives long enough, I imagine Puppy Soap Bars (4) will look just as hilarious.

1) They'll store mugs in any chests/coffers built in your tavern.

2. I'm reasonably sure that a dim indicator means that some but not all of said items are marked as forbidden or to be melted.  A bright indicator means every last one on the map is forbidden or marked to be melted.

3. Yeah, that happens.  Strange moods are triggered by the number of tiles you've dug (and I believe revealed, such as through a cavern), so if you halt expansion it will slow down the number of moods you get or stop them altogether.  That's admittedly not so fun though.

4. I don't think they have any sense of self preservation against the weather.  They'll head back inside to get food or drink if necessary, and usually go back inside if they need to sleep, but if it's just cold they don't know any better.  That said, I think dwarves dying of cold is very unlikely, unless they fall into a pond that freezes.  I've never seen a creature suffer from cold related injury, although I do think it's technically possible in game.

What if it it's just a dining hall, designated from a table?

Surface water is permanently frozen.  I know it's going to be fun pumping some out of the caverns I've found.

Also, I built a deep cistern in what will become the hospital, that I plan to flood once I can pull some water from the cranky Earth.  The liasion keeps running around and falls into it about once a month.  Since there's no water in there that means he takes quite a tumble.  I will be so mad if I go through the work of filling it with water and that idiot falls in and contaminates it.

I think the siege did eventually drive him mad ( :( ) but he was doing this beforehand.

For the temperature, there's a list of important temperatures on the wiki: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Temperature

That said, clothes don't affect body temperature, and there's no such thing as frostbite yet, so generally, unless your Dwarves are in water when there's a seasonal temperature drop, the cold won't affect them.

I am even more sure of this (though I'm not at liberty to test this right this moment).

The Stockpile default list is the 'unexpanded' one that groups similar items together with a count (governed by the vaguaries of your Bookkeeper accuracy) and if it's anywhere form one to all-minus-one it'll show dull. If you apply the setting (Melt, Dump, Forbid, any others?) then it switches them all one way or another (off or bright). Not sure which way, but it'll toggle to the other extreme (bright or off) on a second press.

If you can switch to the detailed view (muscle memory tells me it's Tab, BICBW), due to having the appropriate administrator, you get each item listed separately, which lets you define (or refine) the Dump/etc to particular quality items that were otherwise squashed together in the first list. So you can ensure you aren't Melting your top-slot gauntlets, even if you otherwise wish to recycle the rest.

You now also get a different shaded colour of text to indicate 'usage' statuses of the items, to let you choose better. Don't ask me exactly which shades for what, though dark-magenta may be "in use on a construction", so if you want to expedite marble blocks (say, if this is your style of play) to a building-site and you set up a dumping zone to receive the ten you need then you can select ten 'idle' marble blocks and not any that are sat making up walls/etc and will never be moved there.

You need a container built in the Tavern so that they can store the mugs. Any rock coffer will do the trick!

Yeah, there's plenty of information out there, but you don't need that information to form an opinion and then defend it to the death.
Hey, don't be like that. Your life never had any meaning in the first place!

They don't seem to do that.  They drop their mugs right next to the booze barrels if I don't have a goblets stockpile, and if I do have the stockpile, the mugs end up there.  There is a coffer nearby, within the dining zone.  Does the area HAVE to be flagged as a tavern for them to put their mugs in the coffer?

Yes, it has to be assigned to the tavern. Doesn't have to be a zone, can be a dining room made from table. Dwarves put both mugs and instruments in the coffers/bags.

You sacrificed a puppy's life to save a dwarf's life. It was a hard choice to make and one you will need to live with for the rest of your life...

That was written both seriously and in jest. DF makes for great stories and when the player gets emo when playing, that is the best.

Goblets (by any name) are stored in containers in the tavern, that is correct. However, the tavern has a setting for how many it will claim (and store), which defaults to something like 5 or 10. More importantly, those goblets are for use by poisoners only when shoving drinks down patrons' throats, and are not available for self serving (and if the taverns are bugged the same way hospitals were, and possibly still are, the stuff claimed by the location aren't used for their intended purpose either). Also note that it's probably more efficient to have dorfs drop the goblets in the booze stockpile to be picked up by the next dorfs fairly close to the targeted barrel, rather than being hauled off to a stockpile before being used again, dropped, and then hauled back to the stockpile.

I believe temperatures can be set so extreme in PSV worlds (may require no poles) that cold kills on exposure and organic material gets destroyed rapidly (I haven't seen it myself, but I've tried an embark where it was so hot that anything being outdoors when it rained had all their body fat melted off, which is lethal in all cases I encountered, although I've heard it's possible for some to survive).

The way storing items works in DF, I don't think it's a good idea to have storage for goblets at all. Dwarves in need should pick it up from the workshop first time, and then just from the floor in booze storage (or distillery) for the rest of mug's life.

I also don't have booze storage in tavern and usually only performers (no tavernkeep), so no one is poisoning anyone, despite having storage of mugs (which is more for show than for anything). The drinkers go to the booze storage, pick-up the goblet usually sitting on top of the pot, fill it with one unit of booze and drink. Once finished they drop the goblet back. It's a perfect solution, they never complain, and all except gobbos and vampires have their booze need fulfilled.

Now, gobbos do need the tube-feeding (tube-watering?), but playing with gobbos is weird.
