Dwarf Fortress is now a direct democracy. Every fort starts with a ballot box. Dwarves can now vote if player actions are executed or canceled. So for mining out a block the dwarfs have now the ability to cast their vote for five irl minutes.

More complex topics like military equipment will take an hour with dwarves campaigning, review boards and some professions completely unrelated to the topic declare a strike if they don't like the result.

If a campaign gets heated enough, you may start seeing flyers (relevant engravings, which can replace existing ones), rallies (which distract dwarves from other duties), and advertisements (animated sequences, complete with sound, that you yourself have to sit through!).  These increase in frequency as the campaign wears on; seeing material from opposing camps causes unhappy thoughts, which 1) stack, and 2) are not neutralized by material from their own group.

As a separate suggestion: propaganda.  Interest groups can put out materials that function like a persuasive argument in favor of a particular worldview or ideal; witnessing these can convert an individual to hold that mindset.  You, the player, are not allowed to commission your own propaganda, rather it is produced organically by your citizens as specific ideologies gain traction within your fort.

To add to all of the above, these campaigns last four years and you have to deal with all of it in real time.

Foreign entities could try to influe: for exemple, elves would try to promote candidates opposing cutting trees.

Elf visitors to your tavern should be able to eat other visitors.

When an elf dies, as its final act in life, it eats itself. The ensuing ouroboros then collapses into a writhing singularity of light, before exploding in a dwarf-traumatizing shower of giblets.

This act of auto-cannibalism occurs regardless of the elf's bodily condition at death. Thus, a dying elf may eat itself despite, say, the lack of a head-- or in extreme cases, the lack of a body.

After seeing that all nearby dwarves throw up, the elves quickly run over and eat the vomit then themselves.

This is all incredibly traumatizing to the dwarves.

Elves eat the fabric of reality if exposed to dwarves.

Elf visitors to your tavern should be able to eat other visitors.

Elven ethics permit eating sapients who were killed in battle, but not the butcher of sapients for that purpose.  Only goblins consider both to be merely a matter of preference.
