Games that have made you feel sad

The title. I've only played two so far (Emily is Away and Digital: A Love Story), and I'm curious about your experiences with this sort of game.

Nier: Automata, Trillion and Life is Strange are all games that have made me sad, along with a couple of other games that do not spring to mind at the moment.

Trillion is a game that's basically build around this cycle of hope and sadness and does it pretty well for your first two tries, but gets extremely monotonous after a while. Basically, the plot is that there's this unbeatable foe that's wrecking your kingdom. You, as the mightiest of warriors, lost to this monster. However, your spirit remains and you're tasked with training your underlings to beat this thing in your stead. Every cycle, you choose an underling (all female because Japan) and through a date simulator/time management like game you're preparing her to defeat the boss. If she gets defeated, you'll get a sad goodbye and then choose a new underling, with references to the previous victims.

Nier: Automata is just a loaded game. It contains so many layers of story which are best experienced with no prior knowledge, so give it a shot.

Life is Strange had a pretty poor ending, but still made me feel sad in the end if you picked the 'good' ending.

I'm going to go with "emotionally moving" because the feeling is not always sad, but often "bittersweet", or even joyful but emotive

- Sid Meier's alpha centauri: I found some of the endings, specially the "trascendence" ending, oddly moving.

- Planescape: Torment. Likewise oddly moving. You really relate to your companions. How far they are willing to go for you is also moving.

- Dishonored I, good ending. I think I made a post about it too. And Deus Ex Human Revolution: Sarif ending. Both in the same way. I liked the theme of being a self-restrained overman. In both games you get a huge powerup. In both games you can choose to abuse it (in Dishonored you even have a good motive for doing so). But in both you can choose to be fundamentally decent.

I feel like Nier:AUtomata just comes off as random and weird if you go in with absolutely no prior knowledge, at least with respect to previous games in the series. Understanding the backstory really lends weight to the pointlessness of your entire endeavor, and creates a whole nother level of despair and anguish as you struggle to prevail in a fight you never really had a chance to win.

Recently? The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Both because I'd put an inordinate amount of time into a campaign and story that was now over, and also because I got the "bad" ending... But I'm working on playing through the whole series now to give it another shot.

Previously, there have been a number that resonated with me for various reasons... Including Hotline Miami, of all things.

Borderlands 2 almost made me feel something a few times. Unfortunately, I'm the high Krieg of Skyrim.

Transistor. Fuck.

Bastion. FUCK.

Age of Wonders! Geez, those hastily-written little campaign journal snippets got pretty heavy once you started wandering off the beaten path of "Good guy - Remain good guy" through the campaign's choices... "Bad guy - Even worse guy" contains one of my favorite finishing quotes of all time, and it was written by a tiny Dutch game studio with somewhat sketchy quality control.

DOTA 2 makes me sad too, but for different reasons.

Oh, forgot The Witcher 3. That was emotional as well.

I've not beaten the expansions yet

Also, I found something unintentionally poignant: after you beat the main campaign you appear in an EMPTY Kaer Morhen.  Even though I got the "good" ending, I found it somewhat poignant, as things can't go back to normal after all that happened.

Hotline Miami left me feeling a bit empty afterward, but I chalk some of that up to the music, which has that bittersweet 80s quality to some of it.

Long story-driven games you spend hundreds of hours in are always sad to end, just like good books or series. Witcher, Mass Effect definitely. Mainly because of the characters and because I know I almost 100% them and won't play them ever again. Life is Strange has some sad moments as well, especially depending on choices.

Halo Reach - The ending is pretty fucked up sad

The Walking Dead (TellTale) - If you didn't cry on the ending, there's a 70% chance you're a robot with no emotions

Valiant Hearts - What an amazing story, again, if you didn't cry on the ending, there's 98,6% chance that you're a robot with no emotions

Yeah, there's plenty of information out there, but you don't need that information to form an opinion and then defend it to the death.
Hey, don't be like that. Your life never had any meaning in the first place!

Undertale - First one that came to mind.  The pacifist path isn't really sad at any point, although the ending was surprisingly moving for me.  Killing Undyne in the neutral path is also pretty sad, but the moment that really sticks out for me is Sans' last words if you kill him in the genocidal path.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - This game never really struck me as sad as a kid, but after replaying it as an adult, some of the moments hit me like proverbial tons of bricks.  In particular, the cut scenes that play when you play the Song of Healing for Darmani and Mikau kind of hit me on some deep level I never expected.  The music really sells it, I think.

This War of Mine and Frostpunk drive through well the futility of war and poverty.

I was moved by Planescape: Torment as a kid as well.
