my military is full of nudists apparently
« on: October 23, 2018, 10:10:31 pm »

having a very strange issue - consistently - with my military, in that they will drop randomly their equipment before going on a raid, or before being stationed, or killing an enemy, etc. i try unassigning and reassigning uniforms to force them to put on something different, but before i can look they're already back to their old shenanigans of dropping equipment everywhere. the amount of dwarves ive lost to broken hands because they dropped their gauntlets prior to battle is truly starting to eat my sanity. is it because i mass produce armor to get as many masterworks as possible so it conflicts to their "pick up gear" script? it is at a point where i do not make a military for fighting sieges anymore, i just send them on raids over and over and let traps deal with siege enemies (who are also broken and do weird crazy guy behavior but that is another topic for another thread) because my legendary dwarf axeman decided today is a good day to fight the goblins with no pants

What settings do you have for
Wear_over_Clothing/Replace_Clothing
Partial_Match/Exact_Match
Inactive=Uniformed/Civilian

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

The behaviour of dwarves going on raid makes me angry, too. They can loiter for days, when most of their comrades are already off-map, waiting for the slowpokes. Then they finally walk to the edge, only to decide that the gauntlet you just made is better than what they have, and they need it very badly - so their job changes to Pickup Equipment, and they come back all the way to the storage/shop. It can be repeated for days.

As for your settings, try Exact match instead of Partial match. This reduces number of possible item matches significantly, and thus this behaviour. I was forced to do it on my most serious squads. I still have Partial match on my "Invalides" squads, but they don't do raids or generally combat at all. Additionally it should diminish this partial nudity (Partial match = partial nudity in practice).

Once you finally manage to get everyone to wear masterworks items throughout upgrade replacement cascades should stop. You'd still get occasional replacements for worn items, though.

Another tactic is to wait to assign equipment of a particular type until you've got a full set of masterworks.

Assign every masterwork weapon and armor manually to every soldier. You can allow them civilian cloths, if you wish so and it shouldn't be an issue if you previously banned/destroyed/sold all kind of civilian shoes/boots from your fortress. It is tedious, but trust me, it works perfectly, even when you allow your military to keep their civilian profession too.

It works even on hunters/cross-bow dwarves, who drop all their military equipment when going for hunting. Just with those, when you order them on station, make sure to disable hunting profession, so they stop dragging bone/wooden arrows with them and put properly all assigned armor over their civilian cloths.

The only reason to disallow a military Dwarf civilian cloths is, when you find out there are on them 1000 crowns, rings and so on. Civilian decorations make military way too slow lol.
