A bucket to end all buckets.
« on: October 17, 2018, 10:08:15 pm »

My militia's second in command had a fey mood, and I had just happened to slay a forgotten beast. It was year 256, 5 years after starting the fort. The steel industry was in full swing, Our wealth was so high I could simply trade for bars of rare metal rather than crafting it myself. I managed to gather several of my favorites. Platinum. Rose gold. Silver. It's strange when you see a mood dwarf carry multiple of the strange item. It just happened to be a possessed mood, which from I understand, produces unique, harder to complete requests. Well he grabbed all those metals, and more, and when he required Bone, well I had just happened to slay a creature known as Gilafi Omomothida, an enormous eyeless crow with large mandibles, that undulated rythmically. It's feathers were long and sparse, and it had deadly blood. It was a beast associated with nightmares and caverns. One of my dwarves fell to his tainted blood, blistered and crying out in agony. The second in command of the militia, the very same who created this artifact, was the one to fell the beast. Olon Lastshine, named for his silver mace glimmering in the light being the last thing his enemies see. I thought it only appropriate to allow him to use the creature's bones... for this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Normally buckets are a terrible thing in this game. They cause all kinds of accidents from dwarves just, leaving them in doorways... This might be the greatest artifact in my fortress. I will have to construct a grand, golden well just to glorify this masterwork.

Random, potentially useful fact I recently learned: if you use an artifact bucket for your well and retire the fort, when you unretire there's a good chance you will have a deconstructed well. Same with all other furniture that uses artifacts (except display cases).

Edit in raws, objects, inorganic_metal.txt. In there move adamantine description to top over iron. Start a new game.

Every time before artifact is made, visit the workshop and check if there is used more then 1 material. If so, forbid the base material. Artifact will be made out of adamantine with value fit for royal housing. :)

Don't all buildings more or less get deconstructed?

Is this deconstruction and scattering still a thing when you retire fortresses? I didnīt have the chance to retire and unretire one in the newest version yet, but if so, thatīs a pity.

Unfortunately, Yes. I had recently done so, so I already knew about that. I do thank the fellow above for the PSA though.

Not in my recent experience. I have a world I started in 125 and that's in the mid-150s now, with one main fortress and an adventuring break every five or ten years. I have seen no deconstruction of anything that didn't use artifact materials. Average adventure break length is 6 months to a year. On the flipside, every time I have un-retired, *every* building containing artifact materials was disassembled, and the artifacts were scattered throughout the fort (mostly in bedrooms). The only ones that didn't move at all were those displayed on pedestals, so pedestals seem to be the best way to protect artifacts and things from disappearing during a retire/unretire cycle.

That's odd. When I retired my recent fort, all bedrooms were undesignated, stockpiles gone, goods scattered, and all cabinets were scattered as items. Recent version.

Cabinets are containers, much like booze barrels.
