Light,.
Lets not make our subject insane like we usually do.
Update coming tomorrow. Been busy with work applications and resume polishing. I should point out that this is a pretty important vote. The abilities you get are determined by this decision, and will grow or shrink based on your actions. Also, both can make you "insane". The point is temperament and balance. That said, I'll see you both tomorrow and if Light is still the choice, y'all get Light.

Yume no Taisen
Act I: Reach Out to the Truth

So you have chosen Light? Though every soul has both Light and Dark within it, one will take hold of the reigns and steer you down your path. Every path is unique, with yours showing much promise.

Now the black sphere fades away, while the white one grows several times its size before exploding, and sending tiny streams of light into you. Nothing hurts nor causes any undue reaction in your body. You reflexively stumble a bit to anticipate damage, but merely feel your body fill with warmth as the Light makes itself at home.

Now, a door appears, and you intuitively step through it, only to be confronted with total blackness and a single platform on which you stand. The platform is made of glass, and is comprised of a yin-yang symbol. Moments later, some shadows dance on the surface of this platform, until they take shape, looking familiar to the evil creature from before. The thing called a Nightmare. These are shorter than that one, and seemingly slower, however, their razor sharp teeth, wicked smiles and glowing orbs of yellow beads for eyes fill you with a feeling of anything but sure victory.

But, blocking their way are more tables like the ones that held the essence of Light and Dark. Now you find three. One is host to a sword, the next has a small gun on it, then finally, the last one has a staff on its surface.

Another choice. The sword, a certain weapon able to dispatch any foe. Swift, timeless, and reliable. The sword is the default weapon of a warrior.

You glance at the sword. Its alien design doesn't stand out as effective, merely flashy. It is a white-and-purple invention that is seemingly futuristic. Some kind of technology that hasn't come out yet, is the best way to describe it.

Then, the firearm. Fast, careful, surely lethal and simple, this is a weapon that will enable one to rend enemies from a distance. Ensuring they live another day.

The gun does seem impressive, you admit to yourself. It's a collection of orange, white, black and grey. Mostly white with orange lights scattered about. It seems lightweight, yet lethal. Just like the sword, its design doesn't seem to be human in the least.

Finally, the staff. Ethereal, mystic, and the weapon of legend. Tap into the unseen energies and elements that surround you and turn them on your enemies.

The staff is the most impressive of the three aesthetically. It's like someone took a weird, high-tech stick and used magic to have to float right underneath another piece of the same. Like a line of sticks that threaten to touch but never do, and an odd crest at its top with a floating ball of white light in the center.

> Pick the sword
> Pick the gun
> Pick the staff

Spoiler: YOU (click to show/hide)

((Another important vote. Picking between melee, range and range/magic. Different boons per choice, yada yada yada.))

Gun.

Can we upgrade our weapon of choice? Or are we stuck with the basic form?

Self-Improvement and evolution are core themes in this game so yes. You're always allowed to go higher.

That said, it's two-for-two amongst the staff and the gun. I'm going to leave it open for a little longer, if not, I coin toss it.

EDIT: Staff takes it! Update inbound.

Yume no Taisen
Act I: Reach Out to the Truth

You reach for the staff and grasp it. It's surprisingly not as heavy and cumbersome as you thought it'd be. However, as if it sensed your desire for a more convenient weapon, it compacted itself into a wand, having an aesthetic no different from the staff it was mere seconds ago. Cool! You'll have to see just what this thing can do sometime! You can probably practice on Nightmares. Oh . . . right. The Nightmares. The three that appeared before you took the "wandstaff". They're in a neat little horizontal line, as if to block your way. Way where though? There isn't a way to go from what you can see.

Maybe the way is through them!

Something in you feels different. Someone, something, opened your cranium and poured knowledge into it, the knowledge to use some new and great and terrible power. Luckily for you, you've got three practice dummies to use it on!

> You have learned to use Lightning at a basic level!
> You have learned to use Ice at a basic level!

> Try to turn the wandstaff into staff mode and bludgeon them.
> Use the wandstaff in staff mode and see what this 'power' is.
> Use the wandstaff in wand more and see what this 'power' is.
> Write in.

Write-in:
Try out close combat spellcasting in staff mode. Whack them, and while they recover, hit them with a spell.

While I'm here, explain close combat spellcasting. It sounds stupid, but I have a few ideas in mind (examples from different media) and I want to get your vote right in case it wins.

The example I'm thinking of is attacking conventionally, then using the stun-time of the attack to combo a spell in.

Yume no Taisen
Act I: Reach Out to the Truth

You grasp your staff, ready to execute your plan . . .

You dash for the Nightmare in the centre. Your staff rises in your hands as you bring it to bear on the Nightmare's head. It hits the surface and slides a few inches. The other two waste no time in attacking you. You deftly dodge the swipe of one's claw, and sweep the other's legs with your staff. The last one jumps into the air and you cross your staff horizontally in front of your body to block its attack. The third Nightmare is sent back a few feet from your shove. You then try to use a spell--that feeling you got a short while ago that tells you you're different. This it it.

'Lightning!'

Just then, lightning indeed arcs from the top of your staff towards the third Nightmare, this time sending it several feet back and managing to knock it off its own. You freeze the first Nightmare you attacked in place with a quick shout of 'Freeze!', while the second one gets a nice helping of ice from your staff. It appears all three are now dispatched, and you don't feel too tired. Surprisingly. You almost want to ask what's next until the Nightmares's bodies slide together and amalgamate, creating a bubbling black mass that starts to grow, and grow. You've got no time to wonder how exactly you did that. Because in a few moments, the mass takes form, and the form appears to be . . . you. This thing is you, only its black from head to toe--pure black, as if the colour had never been discovered. Then there are its eyes. Two flaming spheres of yellow that seem to peer at your very essence. It does nothing, and maintains no certain expression on its obsidian face. It only observes, in perfect silence and stillness.

> Talk to this thing. See what it wants.
> Talk to this thing. See if it knows where you are or what's going on.
> Just attack. If it looks this similar to Nightmares it can't be good. (choose plan)
> Write in.

"This seems like a test, so this may be the last section!"

Fight Plan:

Keep moving, this thing looks like it can pack a punch. Hit it with an Ice spell, then move in close with smashes and lightning.
