Barrel to Meat Limit??
« on: September 30, 2018, 10:17:24 pm »

I have two monster kills which generated over 40 meat for one item.  They haven't been placed in the empty barrels or pots so I'm thinking this must be due to some limit which can be held by a barrel. I've searched the forums and dwarf wiki yet unable to locate this limitation anywhere.  I fear the meat will soon turn rotten... any advice?

Relevant wiki article: Barrel

The last paragraph says they can only hold 30 units of meat, so if your butchering produces stacks of 40 they won't fit in the barrels.  That said, if the meat gets moved to a stockpile then I don't think it'll rot unless vermin spoil it.  Barrels and other containers help protect against that, as do cats.  I'm not sure how much good cats do though, I'm afraid.

If you cook it into prepared meals then I'm more confident it won't rot in a stockpile, unless, again, vermin spoil it.

Food sitting on stockpiles seems to attract more vermin, and the vermin probably reduce the amount of meat slowly, but the meat will not go rotten all at once. After some time, the stack will be smaller and the dwarfs will put it in a barrel.

Though it says it can hold only 30 units of alcohol, you can still brew greater stacks from gathered fruits and stick them in.

If barrel is too small, consider storing meat in minecart (still protects from rot). Dwarves can still eat meat in a minecart (they can't drink drinks in it, but can cook those drinks).
