Battle Phase

The bad weather threatens our crops and were it not for the events of the Jungle if we can still call it that, we would be worrying about loss of resources. As it is the second sun that shines upon us, counteracts our losses. For though we have no idea what magic was used to craft such an orb, we can say that its life brings with it unnatural growth. We estimate that if left undisturbed it will completely regrow the Jungle within a year.

There is one inescapable fact we must confront. Little by little, we are being pushed back. We are able to contest the Loji on any battlefield but the weather, but few are the arenas where we fight evenly. Our Mire Monks may be superior to their Ballistas, but they cannot be everywhere.

Our cloaks may shield us from the worst of the damage inflicted by the pillars of fire, but now the flames fall with relentless frequency. We can only be relieved that the enemy’s Hellbringers don’t appear in greater numbers for they no longer seem as restricted by the limits of chanting. Our archers and Dreadmonks must face the horror of the Dreki Fangs with nothing to protect them. In melee, our Blademonks must use brute force and the endless stamina of their marching brews to contest the Jarls with their ability to restrict movement and move with greater speed in turn.

Much of our woes can be blamed on the talismans the Loji chanters wear about their necks. Their magics likely combine multiple secrets in order to be so potent.

Well, let's give this a go.

Runic Experiment: Geomancy [Form(Earth), Attack(Earth), Shape(Water)]
Trying to get some more done with Geomancy. I'm seeing if Attack maybe just doesn't work in the last position, or not for geomancy in general. I wonder if it might be a valid "Ignitor"? But I dunno.

Runic Experiment: Geomancy [Form(Wood), Ward(Shadow), Shape(Water)]
This would be more specific, seeing if the "static field" and "shield of shadow" are specifically connected to those runes. I'm not voting for it but I thought of it.

Investigate - Earth Element
Let's see what Earth's celestial element is, no?

While I support the suggested geomancy experiment, I'd prefer to try a second experiment right now then advance our skill with a form or an element as we're kinda loosing right now so need things to turn that around, and we've a few effects and secrets we haven't really explored yet.

As such I want to suggest a combination of Form(Water), Shape(Air), Ward(Fire), both to test what chain-chanting actually does and in the hopes that it'll end up with something that'll either help us protect us from their bombardment, or something we can use to counter their artillery supremacy.

Though I agree that we are on the back foot, I've thought about it, and I still want to get Earth mastery. Mastery in an element gives us more feedback on how magic works- and the more understanding we have, the better we can actually tailor our experiments to do what we need them to. I'm convinced that Loji has a much better understanding of how the system works, and that is why their magic is more effective than ours.

Currently, what I want to do is this: Investigate Earth, RSE the Spell. Next phase, use Hint Token- what for exactly depends on outcome of this phase, but I'm leaning towards something Geomancy-ish, hence why I'd like to wait until after we have some more Geomancy knowledge. One design to do another RSE probably, one design to make something useful- hopefully with the results of the Geomancy experiment.

So, my thought is that Alchemy:Ward(Earth), Shape(Air), Ward(Fire) is acandidate for some sort of explosives the other is replacing the air with water, and even if it's not it would give us good insight on how to create what we want from an alchemical recepie, so I think it would be worth the clue

Also, here's an idea for the next phase.

Mudcrafters
While the Mire Monks turn mud on the enemy, Mud is so much more flexible then that. And while the Mire Monks mix their mud with poison, the order of the Mudcrafters, whom are associated with the Civil Mageineering Corps, mix their mud with Earth Elemental’s Fortifying Elixir... and use the resulting mix to craft (as well as some old fashioned digging tools). But they do not craft small, delicate objects. They craft walls. Fortresses. Barriers and shelters against the flame that comes from above and beyond. And when that flame comes? Well, it just bakes the mud into baked mud and finds that dirt and water together are not very easy to set on fire.

Discussion on Discord. The chant proposed for the Hint Token is one we got off of DGR (slightly modified to use Form() in the first position). It should be useful in establishing fortifications. Gods only know why DGR didn't use it for that himself. Still want to master Earth, and experiment with Geomancy some more.

Discovery Phase

Investigate Runic Component: Earth Element

Celestial Element ‘Primal’ Discovered
From beneath the earth rises the Primal element ever-expanding with endless energy. From it flows the beginning of all things for it is the raw power of creation. Though we know to look for it now, we have not discovered the secrets of controlling it.

Insight Gained
With our mastery of Earth we have gained a greater understanding of magic. See the Discoveries spoiler for details.

Runic System Experiment (Geomancy): Form(Earth), Attack(Earth), Shape(Water)

New spell discovered: Form(Earth), Attack(Earth), Shape(Water) - Crushing Hand, turns to mud
The spell circle rumbles as the earth shakes. A great hand raises from below and grasps the caster before tightening its grip. If the caster were to maintain this phase of the spell they would likely kill themselves.

Afterwards the earth softens to mud gradually softening and losing form. This effect is likely due to a fizzle on the third Rune.

This fizzle is similar to our last spell experiment, it likely indicates that both Attack and Ward are terminators and that Shape is not an Ignitor.

Earth Mastery
Form(Earth) builds the effect at the activation point, in this case the spell circle. Spare mana strengthens the spell.
Attack(Earth) delivers a blunt attack at the position the spell is located.

Water Mastery
Shape(Water) ought to have transformed the effect into something resembling rain.

Hint: Runic System Experiment (Chanting): Form(Earth), Attack(Earth), Ward(Earth)

New Chant Discovered: Form(Earth), Attack(Earth), Ward(Earth) - Spike
Speaking the pure Earth Element allows the earth itself to rise up as spikes. The spikes are permanent changes to the ground the chant influences. The ground affected extends forward in a line to medium range.

Earth Mastery
This is the pure form of Spike that enables the broad manipulation of the Earth. As long as the material being manipulated is of non-magical earth it can be moved and reshaped in a variety of ways, magical materials of the earth element can also be affected. However all shapes created must contain spikes.

Elemental Distillation
This chant can be used to apply the effects of Earth Elemental’s Fortifying Elixir to another alchemical recipe.

Chanted Spells
This chant can be used to cast the spell Crushing Hand as all Runes involved in the spell are at Adept or higher skill level.

It is now Autumn, Turn 6 Design Phase

Living Bloodblade:
"Those who have handled metal quenched in Blood Hydra's Recovery Potion report feeling like the metal was alive and moving with them."
This is a fascinating claim, and one that merits further investigation. We will assemble the greatest smiths in the land, provide them with the best metal our smelters can produce ((Target ore/land cost: 3 to 4 ore, 3 land)), and enough medium-strength Blood Hydra's Recovery Potion ((5 mana after Form discount)) to quench the metal. They will be given the task to forge a new sword worthy of the greatest swordsmen in the world (us). More importantly, they will attempt to get to the bottom of the 'living metal' phenomenon, trying different procedures in an attempt to make the finished blade respond to the wielder, such that the blade itself lends strength to the user's strikes- making it easier to power through a Jarl's windy field, for instance. While this may take some getting used to, it is anticipated that expert swordsmen could use the ability to perform actions not normally possible, such as radically changing the trajectory of their strike at a moment's notice.

Earthmover's Order

The chant of Spike is an incredibly pure magic, granting one control of the Earth itself. It is simple, but it is not dull or lacking value. Some would use it purely for destruction, but the Earthmover's Order is taught to also use it for it's true strength: Creation.

While Earthmovers can and will use the chant in it's baser form to assault enemies - an upwell of spikes could break a charge or disrupt an unprepared enemy formation - they will also use it in fortification and construction. Using the Earth Elemental's Fortifying Elixir to align their bodies to Earth, the Earthmonks are able to use a medium-strength Spike chant at length, erecting rapidly the kinds of fortifications that would take mundane tools far, far longer to build. They can also use the elixir to mix into the earth of their creations, strengthening them beyond the durability of mundane fortification. Forts to defend against an oncoming attack, raised platforms to give our archers and miremonks clear vision, or more. In combat, they accompany our formations, using Spike to assist them in combat and in protecting from the enemy's long range bombardments.
