How about naming the corrupted rouses the Heightened? It separates them from our normal beasts, and implies that they are inherently better then them.  Also:

Offer it and the rouses with it the corpses of some corrupted slaves to feast on.  Say that this is only the beginning of the feast.

Calmly, you call one of your servants, the alpha Heightened, and you lean against a convenient tree and watch as the rouse spirit snarls and argues with its corruption. It tries to chew at its own flesh, its agony visible and very delicious. Eventually, the Alpha appears.  It snarls at the spirit, which appears weakened by its presence, the boils and sores expanding. And then it leaps.

The two creatures roll about and snarl on the ground, clawing at each other, each one leaving horrid ones. The spirit’s flesh burns and blisters in response to the corruption of the Alpha Heightened, while the Heightened’s flesh is simply scored away, the corruption in its flesh rendering it vulnerable. The other rouses form a circle, watching. You notice a few of them twisting and blistering in response to the corruption caused by you and the Alpha. However, the fight looks very close. You have no idea who will win, and it is entirely possible both will die.

Give our boy in this fight a bit of extra power, to ensure he survives.

+1. Also: Start corrupting vulnerable  members of the swarm, ideally subtly. If the spirit is reflective of it's embodiment's desires,  changing their desires would change the spirit.

Have we just been rolling a bunch of rolls in exactly the middle of all the possibilities?

Damnit people, this is why I said to keep the truce. Because now everyone's ganging up on the cats.
Also, don't forget to contact your local Eldritch Being(s), so that they can help with our mission to destroy the universe.

All it takes is a trickle of power, and the Heightened lets out a roar. It’s only the size of a large dog, but the roar is surprisingly terrifying. The rouses begin to edge back as your taint spreads out from you, some of them starting to warp just a little, and this seems to distract the spirit.

That gives the Heightened an opening it exploits with vicious enthusiasm, planting its claws into its chest and ripping it open, its jaws chewing into the creature’s heart, consuming it, its form rippling and expanding as it eyes begin to glow. It prostrates before you, and the rouses, bodies now bearing sores and gouges of missing flesh, do as well.

You can feel a sense of power from this sudden swell of worship, and your army grows.  With this new source of power you enter the mines, seeking to corrupt the earth itself. As you force your power into the earth, you feel something respond, slowly, and it’s merest brush fills your mouth with the taste of blood and rock. Quickly you break contact and you manage to avoid actually injury, but your head feels fuzzy for the rest of the day as you drink in the prayers and worship of your followers. You also begin to sense a faint concern about food.

Turn a quarter of the rouses into Heightened, and then try to figure out  the situation at camp. Have any of our followers returned yet?

Are our watch stalks an actual edible crop? If not, maybe make one of those.

Also, we have had tons of hints that the real power in this world is some sort of underground entity/civilization. That's TRY to avoid poking it again.

That might  anger the spirit  that's starting to form. Maybe we could  corrupt some of our rouses to be meat animals?
