Vampire Question
« on: September 04, 2018, 12:37:05 pm »

So I've never been good about finding vampires.  I had a migration wave come in recently and had one dwarf that stood out with 84 kills.  However, none of his stats were very high.  His highest score was a 5 as a poet.

Now I've had a dwarf die, drained of all blood.  The weird thing is, the dwarf I suspected no longer appears in my game or in Therapist.  Never knew them to "disappear" from the game before.

Any advise or ideas?

Doesn't Dwarf Therapist have a feature for revealing vampires?  I haven't used it so I'm not sure, but if so that could at least help confirm if it was someone else.

Is it possible that the dwarf was just a visitor?  I haven't actually played enough DF since those were added to know how they work for certain, but based on reports of visitor scholars stealing books I'm reasonably sure that means they can leave on occasion.

Are you sure the dwarf isn't just dead?  I have no idea if Dwarf Therapist filters out dead units or not.

DT does have that feature.  I ended up using it because I couldn't see another way.

The crazy thing....the name of the dwarf has changed.  I have not edited any names.  BUT...in the thoughts section it references the dwarf by his "old, original" name.  And the kills was changed to "0" from the 84 he had when he arrived.

Sounds like an side effect of the aliases that vampires are supposed to operate under.  I think there were (and probably still are) a lot of bugs with that which could cause vampires to reveal their identities unintentionally.  I've actually never seen a vampire in DF so I don't know how the aliases actually work, I'm afraid.

Vampires hide their real stats (like strength or agility), their names, and their kill count. However, due to bugs, you will eventually see the discrepancies. Notably their true name is revealed in their thoughts screen, as well as in mission reports, artefact descriptions and in some other places. It is possible that true kill count and name was revealed also because of a bug.

Sometimes the first name of fake identity is the same as the real first name, then you can miss the reveal, because different last names are harder to spot.

One funny thing which occasionally happen is when the vampire stats says he's weak, but he has enough strength to wrestle trolls or steal a mail shirt from an enemy and beat him with it to death.
