In a large, conservatively furnished boardroom there stand two individuals. The first, a stern-faced man in an expensive suit, hands clasped behind his back and with a pained grimace splayed across his face. The second a nervous, twitchy young man in a button-up shirt and khakis. The two stare at each other in complete silence, the elder's frown growing ever grimmer, the younger growing ever more distressed and nervous. The tension grows and grows as the silence continues to fail to be broken, before the older man sighs, and speaks.
"D, you know why you're here, right?"
The younger man slowly and sheepishly nods, his gaze quickly falling towards his feet.
"You've failed me twice now. I realize that the Wars are not the easiest of assignments, but this level of failure is... unprecedented."
He sighs.
"D, I'm giving you one more chance. Fail me again, and you'll be in the next War, do you understand?"
The younger man gulps, before slowly nodding his head again.
"Good. I've had the team prepare the necessary documents. Don't let me down."
The
Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is the southernmost human habitation in the entire world. In fact, it practically lies on the south pole itself, which is marked by a striped post, jutting out of the ground in the very center of the station. If there were anyone at the station currently outside, they would see an altogether strange and unusual collection of individuals standing in a circle around the pole, all eyeing one another with malice.
At precisely half past noon, everyone throughout the whole facility hears a whistle, sharp and piercing and impossibly loud. Out of everyone, only the warriors know what it means. With bated breath, they wait for the last reverberating echoes of the whistle to fade away before making their first moves.
