Sorry, should have been "A big splatling would have more...". I was replying to the hypothetical, and trying to imply that a big gun wouldn't have as much trouble being outflanked by mobile enemies if it only existed for ten seconds.

Design : Splatling (Average Difficulty)
4+1 = 5: Average

The newly designated 'Splatling Cannon' is short ranged, inaccurate, awkward, heavy, and can drain a full tank of ink in under thirty seconds of continual operation when cranked at full speed. It can also Splat almost a half dozen targets unlucky enough to be caught in front of its barrels in those thirty seconds. Structurally, the Splatling Cannon is made up of three primary parts. It's three rotating barrels that make up the front of the gun, the large crank operated ink-pump that makes up the back of the gun, and the large crank stuck on the side of the back half of the gun that operates the pump in question. Oh, and a sturdy pair of handles on the reverse side of the gun from the crank's side where an Octoling actually holds on to the thing.

It takes a strong Octoling in the first place to use the Splatling, and even for said strong Octolings holding it steady while running the crank at the same time is effectively impossible, resulting in the Splatling actually loosing accuracy as it 'revs up' and its handler hits top speed, while at the same time inertia ensures that firing a single shot at a time requires substantial jerking around as the crank first begins to turn and the pump starts, well, pumping. As such, the gun has two general firing speeds. Low speed, where the crank is turned at a steady and yet low velocity is the gun's normal firing rate, allowing for actual aiming while still firing faster then the Bamboozler. Meanwhile, when needed, the Octoling may instead start shoving the Crank around as fast and hard as they can, greatly increasing the firing rate and somewhat improving the range of Splatling as the pump is worked much harder then at slow speeds. However, the yanking around of the gun caused by working the crank at such high speeds also reduces accuracy to 'the broad side of a barn, maybe' levels when worked at that rate. Still, at full speed a veritable waterfall of ink seems to emit from the end of the Splatling Cannon, and any target unlucky enough to be in front of the cannon at that time is liable to very much not enjoy that time. For, of course, the limited duration such a firing rate may be kept up before an Ink Tank runs dry.

Costs 3 Plastic, making it Expensive.

Quote from: OUTDATED
Bamboozler 2
Our current Bamboozler is a weapon that functions. That is all the positive that can be said about it. Admittedly that was all that needed to be said before, but now with our Splatling showing how good a weapon can be, a weapon that just functions isn't good enough. That's where these improvements come in.
The current problems with the Bamboozler can be boiled down to a few specific things. While I myself haven't really managed to figure out a method to improve the ink intake rate of the gun yet, this improvement will still work to solve the problems of ink efficiency, and charge time. Currently, the weapon fires through sheer ink pressure alone. Holding the trigger pumps ink in and seals the reservoir to prevent firing, and once the weapon is at max charge there is simply so much ink built up in the weapons reservoir that it fires out when the trigger, and thus the nozzle valve, is released. This, obviously, requires a significant amount of ink to make work, the slow intake speed means that the gun takes a long time to reach that level of pressure, and the fact that the pressure is all reliant on building up the ink to that level of pressure is what makes it require a full charge to fire. By changing the firing 'mechanism' we can attempt to remove most, if not all, of these restrictions.

The new firing mechanism uses a large sliding plunger, separating the reservoir into two halves, and a hand pump attached to the bottom of the weapon. The weapon still fills up with ink in the normal way, though the ink flows in from the furthest end of the reservoir instead. The hand pump meanwhile, is used to fill the nearest end of the reservoir with air from the environment, pushing the plunger forward. When combined with the ink flowing into the front end this method builds up to the same level of pressure about as fast as the wielder can pump, greatly decreases ink needed per shot, and maintains most of the air pressure between shots. This means that after you've fully pressurized the weapon once, you then only have to pump occasionally if the pressure decreases, and can instead just charge normally with a significantly reduced charge time. This does however have its own problems, namely that over pumping can lead to having minimal space to ink, and thus having pitifully small shots, even if they do come out rapidly. To alleviate this somewhat, we've added a cap near the rear end of the weapon that can be opened to allow air to escape, and the weapon to be pumped back to the desired air level.

Stabilizer Flywheel
Splatling Ugrade

By the addition of a weighted flywheel to the Splatling, less effort is needed to maintain high rates of fire. In exchange for some loss of accuracy during initial spin-up, any stable fire rate (normal or maximum) will be much more accurate as the flywheel averages out cranking forces.

Frankly, I'd hold off on voting for my revision until the version that isn't based on false information about the weapon being revised is done.

Wouldn't that add to both the weight and the increadable cost, also a giant spinning wheel heavy enough to to act as a counter force is how octolings lose fingers.

Alright, I present the new and improved Bamboozler Mk.2, a revision that seeks to take the body of the Bamboozler, and rebuild it into something worthy of being called a Charger.

Quote from: Bamboozler Mk.2
Bamboozler Mk.2
Our current Bamboozler is a weapon that functions. That is all the good that can be said about it. At the time, that was all that needed to be said. Now though, with our Splatling showing how good a weapon can be, a weapon that just functions isn't good enough. That's where this reworking comes in. In theory it takes the parts of that old basic Bamboozler we have now, and repurposes them into something better. Right now, the Bamboozler is a mess, it has a worthless minimum pressure locked safety and valve system that would have been better if replaced by a big flip cap on the end of the gun, wastes fairly large amounts of ink per shot as a consequence, and because of the safety system it takes ages to actually fire only doing so when fully charged.

The first part is to rework the plunger. Right now the plunger does two things, when pulled back it un-blocks the ink intake, thus allowing ink to flow into the weapon, 'charging' it. Then, when the weapon is forward, pushing the plunger forward with force is how you fire the stored ink. It works, even if it isn't the most elegant or effective design, but this part can be used so much better. First of all is to cap off the back end of the Bamboozler, leaving an air tight(or as close as we can manage) hole that will still allow the plunger shaft to move in and out, ideally the plunger head itself should make an air-tight seal with the reservoir walls. Second, we put a valve at the back of the Bamboozler that can be manually opened. Third, we put a simple manual air pump on the bottom of the weapon on the plunger side, when the pump is pushed away, air from the environment can get into the pump, and when it's pulled back the air gets compressed down into the Bamboozler, specifically behind the plunger. This means that when the pump is... well, pumped, it will fill up the part of the Bamboozler behind the plunger, thus pushing the plunger forward and increasing the air pressure as fast as the wielder can pump.

The second part is to rework the intake, the safety, and the firing valve. The safety, or at least the mechanisms involved in it, will be translated into making a large 'trigger' on the front of a grip coming off the side of the weapon. When pressure is applied to it, it will activate the two main valves, but in different ways. The firing valve, which is the one stopping the ink from leaking out of the weapon before firing, is opened by default. The intake valve meanwhile, which allows ink into the weapon, is closed by default. For as long as the trigger is being pressed, both of the valves will have their states reversed. The intake valve will be open, allowing ink from the tank into the weapon, while the firing valve will be sealed, preventing ink from leaking out of the barrel. As Ink flows into the weapon, it will fill up in the front portion of the reservoir, and begin to compress the air reservoir. Once enough pressure has been reached, releasing the trigger will open the valve, thus releasing the pressure from the ink, and allowing the air reservoir to decompress, firing the ink outwards with greater force that just pure ink pressure alone would be able to manage.

All in all, this means that you will be needing less ink for each shot, will have a significantly lower minimum charge threshold, will likely be able to manage greater force(and thus range) than the hand propelled shots of the Bamboozler 1, and because the air is in a separate reservoir you won't have to re-pump between shots.

Revision : Bamboozler Mk.2 (Hard Difficulty)
4+2-1 = 5: Average

In the limited time left within summer after the development of the new Splatling Cannon, designers turn their attention to an attempted almost 100% rebuild of the Bamboozler's internals. The internal compactor where ink is compressed to power the Bamboozler's shots is to be replaced by a duel tank system using pressurized air to help propel the pressurized ink longer and harder then it could normally be fired, while at the same time using less ink per shot, as well as reworking the somewhat complicated firing mechanism so it is easier to charge on the go. There is some confusion in the design specs where someone was lead to believe that the Bamboozler Mk.1 was a purely muscle powered design instead of a proper Ink-Tech weapon, but the conceptual changes are still good, and should have been effective.

Unfortunately, while the designers were inspired and fired up enough to (mostly) complete their redesign of the Bamboozler, they lacked enough time to clean up and simplify their new design. Thus leaving it somewhat wasteful in material and requiring a skilled engineer to actually build the thing. This prevents the new weapon from being handed out to anyone who has not proven themselves as possessing elite skill, while the veterans and common troopers are left with the more easily mass producible basic model of the Bamboozler. As well, the air tank it ended up with is slightly leaky, requiring frequent breaks to go pump more air in and re-pressurize it.

In retrospect, designers think they should have either assigned enough time for a proper redesign of the Bamboozler, or satisfied themselves with a less ambitious alteration then a total rebuild of the guns innards. Perhaps if they'd had substantially more experience with Ink-Tech weaponry it would have been possible, but they've only designed a single Ink-Tech weapon so far. And while the Splatling Cannon is a good weapon, it doesn't function like the Bamboozler, limiting the use of their existing experience.

The Bamboozler Mk.2 Costs 3 Plastic and is Complex, making it Very Expensive.

In Arowana Castle, high level talks between Inkling and Octoling leaders break down as Daimyo Octavio leaves in protest against what he refers to as 'continual Inkling callousness and mockery'. Tensions are up across the great island, and Inkling and Octoling find their days consumed with worry. Could the war that so many of the experts has claimed shall not come... be coming after all? Rumors abound of secret Inkling mobilizations, while a high level Octoling official, under a strict condition of anonymity, stated that 'no matter what Inkling treachery we face, with our new tools the Octoling people will stand forever supreme. I mean, have you seen what my guards are carrying these days?'. Unfortunately, that was when a bushel of Octoling Elite Agents burst into the room and forcefully ended the interview.

Your leaders estimate that minimal amounts of low level and unofficial skirmishing will have broken out by the end of Fall, and while Winter will put a temporary rest in things due to the, you know, cold and snow and all that dampening down everyone's enthusiasm for violence, they expect open and authorized combat to open up by the end of Spring. You are encouraged to hurry with your preparations, for time is limited. These peaceful days are nigh well over.

The Design Phase of Fall, Year 0 has begun.

Tough Stuff
Passive Ability

Recently developed by as a dye by an especially artistic sailor, Tough Stuff was quickly classified by one of our allies in the Octoling government for use in the coming war. By mixing ichor extracted from Hard-Shell Sea Snails with powdered rust in a 1:1 ratio, an unpleasant brown paste that dries a bright orange color can be produced. More importantly, it also makes 'lings who wear clothing dyed in its colors significantly more durable.

Secret tests have demonstrated remarkable resistance to small injuries, with wearers unharmed by dripped ink and punches from a scientist. A braver volunteer was obliterated by Splatling firing squad, but safely respawned and claimed to have survived complete immersion for several seconds.

Private Lena "Loony" Lata
Hero

Born and raised in Inkopolis, "Loony" was a lifelong gangster. As a Blue-Ringed Octoling, she has paralytic saliva strong enough to kill. As a hitman, her preferred methods usually revolved around her kelp chewing habit; she'd spit the wad of kelp in her victim's face, and once they couldn't move she'd drag them outside city limits where the Respawn Points won't work to let them finish suffocating.

Seven months ago, she was caught trying to pull a quadruple-kill job, her biggest ever. Extradited from Inkopolis back to Octo Valley, she would have been given a life sentence in Clam Jail. Would have, that is, if she hadn't offered details of her last job. See, she'd been told Inkopolis was mustering for some kind of special police raid and would try to bust the entire Squidbilly Gang, but that had been... incorrect... to say the least. What Loony found was an army, weapons factories, the works. It was her testimony that led to Octoling Valley's own preparations, and may well see her recognized as the savior of Octo-kind someday.

Right now, though, she's enlisted and is probably the best fighter this side of Mount Nantai. As evidence of her crimes, we were sent her custom Micro-Bamboozlers, a pair of well-used pair of weapons for anyone she didn't mind respawning. Rather than a crosspiece, the pumping mechanisms are small thumb rings which operate a 1" wide, 3" long chamber. Exquisitely machined nozzles maintain range and accuracy, and ink is drawn into the chamber directly through hoses attached to the pistol grip base of the weapons. As repayment for her services, she was given free reign to requisition prototype equipment from our facilities. She had a Rotodynamic Pump installed on her old ink tank, then took some of our best stuff: Self-Inflating Cluster Mines that scatter smaller ink balloons underfoot when the main balloon pops, and a Super-Splatling that unfolds into an armored turret.

Octo Home Guard: With tensions rising with our Inkling neighbors, it has been decided that a more organized defense will be required in case of conflict. Our Militias will now be organized in a professional Home Guard made up of voluntaries from all walks of Octoling life meeting Bi-Weekly for training in weapon certification, maneuvering in Ink Form, and squad tactics. Though they will initially be armed with current stocks of available gear, when other weapons and equipment become available members will be allowed self-specialization should they prove adept.
Bringing this design back to the front because I feel like it will be important to have a proper, competent fighting force.

S.A.P. - Splatling Attack Platform
Due to the recent observations about the Splatling it is obvious  that it is a mediocre weapon due to it's unstable platform of fire, this tripod will be three two part metal legs connected to a mount with the metal rods being adjustable by loosening a bolt at the connection between the two rods that make up each leg, hopefully this will assist us in our efforts to protect the octoling motherland.
