Dwarf sit here

I am noob

I read the wiki about some defensive designs. Their diagrams entail marksdwarfs individually being posted at specific tiles. How do I get them from the state where they are running around doing their everyday tasks, to each individually sitting at their post shooting badies?

Use s to open squad mode, then individual letters to select a squad (for example, push 'a' to select your first squad. You can also push shift-B to add your second squad to that selection). Then, press 'm' to order them to move somewhere, select the tile you want them to move to, and they'll station themselves in a 7x7 square around that tile.

(further question: how do you order your marksdwarves to shoot animals through a fortification?)

Well, that's my problem is you can order your squad to move and station them, but I do not see a way to move individual dwarves in the squad and give each their own post to shoot from.

You mean, against the fortification?

That bit is usually ensured by having only 1 walkable tile next to the fortification, though defend burrows order would work as well (with 1 day delay to switch to new alert). If you want every dwarf to have their own post and that particular post, instead of just that bit, you need to set several defend burrows orders with each having #n preferred, 1 dwarf minimum.

If that day delay is too much, you could order individual dwarves with station orders with the walkway covered by hatches so that each dwarf only has 1 tile they can stand on station via judacious locking and unlocking.

You completely lost me.
How does a 1 tile walk way get particular dwarves to particular spots?

Burrow with preferred? I don't understand.

Any chance if video demonstration?

1 tile walkway on its own doesn't, it just ensures they're next to fortifications, which is usually all you want.

When you set military orders, you can select a dwarf on the right, which means it'll try to choose a dwarf in that particular squad position - i.e. that dwarf unless you change your squad composition or give it to differen squad. And you can set the military order to be 'Defend Burrows', and only use 1 dwarf, and give multiple orders like that, each with different preferred dwarf.

And not from me. Typesetting, editing, etc. is quite time-consuming; You can check the wiki on military alerts if you want longer explanation, I guess.
