Consoler or pacifier?
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:26:13 am »

I have one dwarf with a high skill as "consoler". I have another dwarf with a high skill as "pacifier". Which one would be a better mayor if I want to deal with high-stress dwarfs yelling at someone in charge?

I guess that pacifier is used for anger prone dwarves. Since tantrums are worse than other emotional breakdowns, I would favor pacifier over consoler.

But maybe I'm wrong and which skill is used doesn't depends on the complainer personality, but in which kind of emotion triggered the meeting or something like that.

What you're saying makes sense. My biggest concern is just lowering the stress of my most stressed dwarfs. So, because my #1 is more of a brawler, I'll go with the pacifier. If my most stressed dwarfs tend toward nonviolent emotional breakdowns, I'll switch to my consoler.

If I am not mistaken consoler is used for grief-stricken/terrified dwarves, while pacifier is used for angry dwarves.

If there's a mayor or baron on site, stressed dwarves especially close to the edge will seek them as a shoulder to cry upon, i would imagine this trains consoler. It may be the same for purple status haggard dwarves who are typically immune to drifting off the total edge into madness but sway back and forth between unproductivity feeling sad and coping.

however in my experience, a actual murderous rampage enabled not by tantrums but rather just plain anger (that can't be stopped non lethally but are punished when it ends eventually with justice action) pacifier is kind of useless for, only the tantrum type. You can get angry individuals from 2nd generation goblins (probably more desirable) and occasionally dwarves who have been rained upon.

My best advice would be to pick up consoler (unless i've been unobservant and 'lost to rage' can be fixed by a intervention) on someone you wish to nominate for barony.

Are you sure that those kind of crimes are now being reported? Bar brawls were not being reported in previous versions and I think that has not changed, and the same goes for tantrum derived deaths which, from what I've seen, only gets reported as dissorderly conduct -I'm not sure if an inmediate death instead of death by the derived injures would get reported as murder, though.

For me, right now, it seems to be trying to reduce the chances of getting a random dwarf potientially killing several others vs trying to reduce the chances of a single (and unproductive) dwarf getting himself killed, but hat's assuming that pacifier do help reducing the stress of tantrum prone dwarfs and not that, how it has been already suggested, meetings actually hinder stress levels by preventing dwarves to do other activities which give stronger good thoughts -like drinking or praying.

I've witnessed it in modded in goblins who have [ANGER_PROPENSITY] traits, prone to rage critters might also exhibit extreme violent murderous fits the same way.

Bar brawling is different, its a oversight more than a bug because the actual fight follows rules the justice system isn't adapted to. If it could actually understand when the fight ends (ei in a lethal encounter, its when they've died) for a bar brawl using fisticuffs and the person involved with the fight is on the floor & loses aggro.

Justice screen is really really old remember, i doubt toady's managed to update it in a while because all the behaviour of tavern fist fights & drunkeness have been ultimately suppressed from the player across multiple versions.
