Whips vs Scourges
« on: July 23, 2018, 05:44:43 pm »

Whips and scourges both share an incredibly small point of contact, use the lasher skill and can be pretty awesome to use. While whips are blunt, scourges are considered edged. Which one do you prefer?

Scourges. I prefer edged weapons.

Doesn't matter to me, since the likelihood of getting one of reasonable quality and good material is absurdly low without modding, at which point you might as well give yourself an M1 tank.

Scourges have a contact area of 10 and a penetration value of 50. In other words, the resulting wounds are tiny and shallow. Pretty sure that makes them the worst (non-misc object) weapon in the game.

I would compare them to a pizza cutter.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

They're great for shredding armor because of the small contact area and velocity modifier. Tissue layers are also both weirdly thick and thin simultaneously, so they open arteries, sever muscles, and nerves more often than you might expect on dwarf sized creatures.

I personally prefer whips, but in adventurer mode I also use scourges occasionally - they are good for removing for example hands.

The reason I prefer whips and overall blunt weapons is their inability to become stuck. It is particularly annoying in adventurer, but in fortress mode too. It forces the dwarf to waste time on removing it from the wounded opponent (which may fail). Also blunt weapons are better for overcoming armour - I mean mostly the helmets, including on the unconscious opponent.

When I train a couple of dwarves with no military history (like 12 years old peasants), I often give then silver whips.
