Correct. The alternatives are to kill them without first taking them prisoner, and then either haul their corpses from where they were killed to a disposal facility or suffer the loss of everything useful from them except artifacts and iron/steel (if magma is used), or turtle until the buggers go away.
- The extra corpse hauling is a drain of dorf power, harming morale, and puts the haulers in danger (from other hostiles).
- Magma killing robs you of copper/bronze/underwear.
- Turtling is boring and robs you of surface access.

For copper, you can submerge them in just half a day or less, and have it remain behind (example).

(One can use this basis to haul magma in copper carts, removing the need for nickel (magma-filled carts stand in open air at only ~half of magma's hotness)

Glass spikes are very good still. I recently (0.44.12) killed a yellow diamond FB with them
Gems are one of the big holes remaining in the materials data. The density values are filled in fine but the resistance to shear is just
taken from the stone template which sets it to be easier to cut than skin.

Is it still possible to strip caged prisoners of their belongings? IIRC it was done by making all their items forbidden or marking them for dumping. I used to do that then use the stripped prisoner for combat training in the arena.

I haven't heard about it being changed, so I assume it still works (I last did it with 0.44.05). Paint the cages with d-b-d and then go over each cage manually to remove the dump mark (so the cage itself isn't dumped).
The system doesn't work on artifacts, though, so books held won't be dumped. I believe there's a DFHack script for prisoner stripping, but I've neither used it nor looked at what it does.

It should also be noted that you need to claim the items first by painting them with with d-b-c since they are forbidden by default.

They're extremely overpowered though. Is that the only reason why people use other options? Or is it something else I don't know about?

A single-wide walkway with masterwork steel menacing spike weapon traps, flanked on either side with 10-deep pits that have leaden floor plating for those that dodge the traps, and ramps that allow any potential survivors to walk back to the start of the walkway, is sufficiently powerful too. Ever since I've ensured the mechanic parts are all masterwork, nothing else has dodged, however. The most recent visitor was a cyclops, who did not make it past the second trap.

But more importantly, it leaves me with a relatively simple cleanup without extra bodyparts, no prisoners that I have to muck around with, yet I keep the remains: bones, goblinite, etc.

Does the siege loose morale from caged invaders the same way it does from fallen invaders?
E.g. enough caged prisoners - the siege is broken and the remaing invaders walk away.

Yes, though I'm not sure if this is a morale thing, or just the numbers. Like they give up after a certain number is incapacitated. However, this seems to work only for normal sieges (goblins), not zombies.
