You accept the loan while trying to work out in your head how much that is in thredels, a small coin equalling exactly one sixth of a tailer. (The name derives from Old Dwarven words meaning "three parts" and describes the fact that it was originally defined as a third part of the halftailer, which is no longer in circulation.) Your mind briefly thrills with a cosmos of coinage as you contemplate how many pins (a tiny iron coin whose value is nearly exhausted by inflation, in serious use only by the peasantry) make up the value of an old Elven wooden tekkle, which legend says dwarves once used before developing their own forms of currency. All of these rich bastions of dwarven history and culture are, of course, now under threat of extinction in preference to notes of reception from the Vaults, an establishment of dwarven ingenuity whereby anyone can exchange coins or precious metals for simple paper certificates which entitle the bearer to redeem the same amount at any Vault across all the lands where Vaults are to be found, which as far as you know is most of them. No Vault exists in Abystok's territory, however, so coins remain preëminent here.

At this point you startle awake and realise that you drifted off to sleep while daydreaming about money, a dangerously commonplace affliction among dwarves. It is now the middle of the night, and the area around your office is eerily quiet.
