He gives a cheerful nod and leaves the room in a rather obsequious fashion. You follow shortly after, return to your usual position at your temporary "throne" (which is just a chair), and signal for a runner to find Nedru and let him know you're ready to see him.
Only a few minutes later, he shows up. "The caravan from Roskulet arrived today looking to trade textiles for food, as expected. Seems there's been a small miscommunication, though, so some of the food merchants asked me to ask you how you actually wanted this trade handled; most of our people expected a private exchange because that's how we've usually handled this in the past when we were all under the same kingdom, with our merchants free to meet with theirs, haggle their own individual prices, and keep the proceeds for their own use or resale — but the Roskulet dwarves thought you intended to purchase or appropriate goods for export yourself, then have an official representative negotiate for the whole fortress."
He notices your glazed expression and explains in more detail. "It's fair to say that our merchants would prefer the less restricted trade scenario where they can freely make deals individually, but, if you want more control over the process, especially if you want to be able to choose how to disburse the textiles we import in exchange, you should take a direct role. Of course, in that case you'll have to appoint someone to perform the trading, unless you want to do it yourself, I suppose..." (He doesn't look like he recommends that very much.)
"Oh, right, and, if it affects your decision, reports are that we have quite a substantial surplus of food available to trade this year. About three times our normal consumption, I hear."
A) Just let the merchants handle it privately, that's fine.
B) I want to keep a tighter hand on trade, and...
1) I'll do the haggling myself!
2) I'm deputising you to take care of it!
3) I have someone else [specify!] in mind to do it!
4) I really don't care who you pick to make the deals!
