"Come now! As your King, I pledge to enforce the cause of justice, no matter who might be against it! Even if this merchant is from my clan, it's still my duty to protect you if he breaks the laws."

The peasant pauses and looks at his two companions, and seems to sense the mood of the room. "Fine," he spits like a curse. "I had an arrangement with Geldrik Duckbeard Highbrows to sell off my surplus crop of mud wrensfoot for a
very generous 20% commission. Today I find out that he already contracted to sell to one of his own brothers for less than four
tailers a
wain! I could have got ten, maybe twelve times that, at least! I know the law, he has to sell for the best price he can find, not give his family a break at my expense! Now his brother can just resell it, I'm sure they've already agreed to split the profits... If you're serious about what you said, make him or his brother pay for my losses!"
Well, if what this dwarf is saying is true, Geldrik's actions
would be against the law, which clearly states that a merchant selling on commission must make a good-faith effort to maximise his client's profit. You suppose there might be a good reason to make the sale described — you certainly have no clue what the market rate for mud wrensfoot is — but you don't have enough information to guess what it would be.
A) Ask this guy if he can introduce you to the merchant in question so you can make further inquiries.
B) Promise to make Geldrik compensate him, and go off to find the merchant on your own.
C) Promise to compensate him yourself to avoid a fight or damage to your clan's reputation.
D) Blow him off and tell him to trust that Geldrik knows what he's doing!
E) Tell him you'll look into it, and then ask Nedru; surely he'll tell you what's really going on.
