Disaster in the mines! Miners working in the tunnels beneath the seafloor struck some kind of porous rock layer that started discharging saltwater into the shaft and their faces. Loss of life was minor, but the area had to be sealed off to prevent flooding Abystok itself, so the operation has been set back by at least a month, according to the thegns. Apparently this is "just something that happens now and again, and we have to deal with it."

For a moment you're happy, then you sigh and remember the other problem; you dispatch the messenger back to Nedru to tell him about the setback in the mines.

A few hours later, Nedru is at your side again. "As your Treasurer, I feel that I must recommend you cancel the planned budget meeting. Although we turned a profit off the humans, we're still hanging on by a thread, and I don't think you should risk spending that profit until we at least know whether the mines will go overbudget."
