You accept the improved deal. The diplomats bow repeatedly for some reason and tell you that the first caravan will arrive before summer ends.

A couple weeks later, you are walking through a corridor when you are suddenly accosted by a dazed-looking, wild-eyed human, clutching at your robes!

In an instant, Gostell is at your side — where did he come from? — and somehow opens up a space between you and the human without ever touching it. The ancient art of sheer intimidation, you guess. The human falls to the ground and starts blubbering, and you eventually figure out what it's trying to say: this human is one of your runesmiths' thralls, distributed here from prisoners taken in some war a bunch of years ago, and it wants you to set it free to return to its human family or whatever it is they have. (Given the diplomatic education you earned by virtue of your class, you know perfectly well that humans have families, and many other things about them besides, but you also learned to maintain an affectation of uninterested superiority.) Legally, you could certainly do this, since all property in Abystok, including thralls, technically belongs to you. But you also take a moment to consider your other options.

A) Offer to smuggle the human out of the fortress in secret.
B) Refuse to get involved and bring the human back to its owner.
C) Offer to buy the human from the owner and release it, acting as a citizen instead of a king.
D) "Gostell, strike this sniveling beast down right here."
E) Or just do what the human wanted and grant it clemency.

The human has been a thrall long enough to speak dwarven, or, well, a kind of dwarven pidgin that most of them speak and you can more or less understand each other. It wants to be released so it can go back to its human family. It is probably aware that there are other human thralls who also probably have human families and you can't release all of them if you want to still have an economy afterward, but humans are kind of dumb and don't always think about others. You learned that from your cultural education tutors too.
