Managed to get my first win

Formicids are hilariously good, with huge defense and offense as well as immunity to a lot of dangerous statuses. That said, if something goes wrong in a situation when you can't use your digging, then it can REALLY go wrong. There were a few times where I just summoned a bajillion allies and chugged heal wounds potions until I ran out completely. I also had awful luck with equipment: No GDS until too late, no branded plate armour until after Depths, no branded boots or gloves and the only source of rF I found was a ring of fire. It turns out that Executioners and the Lajatang of Order wreck OOFs really fast, so the lack of rF wasn't as bad as it could have been. Oh, and I never ran into a caustic shrike pack, which is probably the biggest factour in my win.

Ugh lost a 4-rune MiWr^Fedhas in Zot, because I voluntarily entered one of those transporter vaults. Now it's another 4 hours of slowly creeping through early and mid-game again. Really wish webtiles were faster.

Well, my strategy of playing a boring melee character has paid dividends this game, I've cleared Zot:5 and will start my orb run in a bit. If I succeed it will be my first win ever.

Sweet Victory! Hordes of demons are powerless before my boots of running.

Nicely done Karlito!

I'm wondering whether to take my easy 5-rune win, or go on and push for extended:

I have great resists, but my AC is kind of low so I can get burst down pretty easily - nearly bit it in Slime to a Voltron Slime creature. I can shuffle a few rings around, and probably get about the same resistances as now, but with GDA or the Orange Crystal plate, which should give me a lot higher AC. I can also buy the Singing Sword for 3400, which is pretty expensive for a mediocre Double Sword, but hey.

On the other hand ...extended is pain

Ok, finished up my first game - its slow and ugly, but that's the way I play.

I had one dodgy moment in the IceCav, which I probably shouldn't have entered to be honest - I didn't have a good way of taking out a statue, and couldn't cast spells and have rC+ at the same time.

Apart from that it was ridiculously plain sailing - the hardest decision with SpEn after your first two runes is where to stick all the unnecessary XP.

Highlights:
Killed Nikola with one cast of  Tukima's Dance.
Invisi-stabbing Draconians, which just never gets old.
Finally finding a throwing net in Zot5 so I could kill those ancient lichs really easily instead of just easily.

Gah, still no wins! My latest was a Formicid who had >40 STR and >40 AC but got totally wiped in a castle in Elf:3 by some crazy strong demons I couldn't run from or tunnel since the walls were all 1 thin and the whole place was surrounded by a moat. (I didn't try to shaft, but are you even able to dig a shaft on Elf:3?)

Still having fun, maybe I'll go back to playing Minotaurs till I can score a win. Still getting some points from grabbing runes so I'm doing a lot better than last year!

Also I specifically grabbed the high score from a combo with 1k points for the Politician banner but the site did not give it to me :(

So, I've got +9 eveningstar of flaming
I've got +10 platemail of +8str -4int -stealth
I've mostly focused on invocations fighting maces armor shields

do I try to get my 3rune win? DsGl of makleb, mutations are rotting immunity, antennae, demonic guardians, boneplateshielding, and I think somehow one more as of yet unassigned?

or do I swap to dragon scale (fire ice acid swamp found so far) and start learning some basic magic? (Feels like a lot of good books are available to me, or in stores).
Reason to learn magic of course would be to get more than 3runes, to learn spells like silence/deflect missiles/blink/apportation/etc/although glaciate fire storm and tornado are available in books there's no way i'd ever be able to reach them, silence though? maybe if I take off this platemail.

I think you might want to train throwing or some other ranged attack than magic, with your INT at 8 I'd suggest keeping your magic selections to spells lvl 4 and under (Maybe Mana Vipers if you really want to go hard on Hexes), at least through the three rune run.  It just takes a lot of XP to really power up attacks when your INT is so low.  Personally I'd turn training everything else off and just train throwing alone until you hit lvl 15.

As for extended, suppose it depends on your ranged options and whether you're familiar with Pan or the Hells, as there's some pretty nasty situations you can get in if you're not expecting them.   

Edit: wrote it not noticing you armor was lowering your INT, but still, even at 12 unless you get some decent +INT I'd still probably keep my magic selection light, especially considering the amount of EXP plowed into armor and fighting (Fighting boosts ranged wep damage, so even more reason to pick up some javelins.)

I've got a +9 arbalest I believe (or +8? of elec), and a +3 blowgun, otherwise no really good throwing stuff (I think there's a shortbow of velocity out there somewhere too, and a regular +0 triple crossbow). I've done hell and pan before, but that was just stomping them with tornado, I doubt I'd ever try them on a melee character. Yeah my stats are uh, 20str 12int I think, I get +10str and -4int from gear. Maybe it would be worth training crossbows instead of throwing? I had hoped that my makleb invocations would be sufficient ranged attacks.

Yeah I don't think there's any chance my magic will ever be good offensively, deflect missiles would be nice though, I could pre-cast it without armor on, then put on armor and go down stairs, because deflect missiles has no duration, silence might be too high level, but it'd be really nice to pair silence on a melee character. Even if I limited myself to level 1-4 spells, I could learn blink, but, I actually have a large shield +2 of blinking (which was why I was training evocations up somewhat) Using +2 shield regular shield atm because my shield skill is too low for me to think large shield is worth it (yet). Although all my good ranged weapons are 2handed, I guess you were recommending throwing because I could do throwing and keep my shield and shield skill in use... hmm. I have seen a few tomahawks but I reckon I'd run out of them quickly given how few I've seen, and with no shoals, there have been no javalins iirc.

I'd take a quick ctrl+f of throwables just in case, and then second option would be a one handed crossbow (hand crossbow?  I forget the name).  You don't really want to rely on anything ranged that's two handed, especially with your investment in shields and maces. 

You could probably rely on major destruction to pull off a three rune win but I wouldn't push my luck if you don't have a reliable ranged solution by then.

Yeah plenty of +0 hand crossbows laying around, maybe I'll just stick to what I've been doing so far and aim for 3runes. I've actually never won (I have a 15rune game in 0.21 webtiles that I stopped playing when the tournament started right before my orb run), and I'm in the miners, so, even a 3rune win is going to be great.

Searched for all throwing and found 14 tomahawks, spread out across 4 different piles, which is what made it seem like there were basically none, doesn't seem worth training throwables for such a small supply, although I'm in the vaults now, maybe I'll come across a treasure trove of throwables and do as you suggested.


edit: Oh also,
I have 1 bad mutation and 3potions of mutation, how many mildly bad mutations should i acquire before I pop my first potion of mutation?
frail -10% hp isn't instantly game losing, but I do wish I didn't have it, and I wonder how much worse it has to get before I can attempt a "cure".

edit2: Oh wow got a +0 antimagic eveningstar from hall of blades, that's probably better than a +9 eveningstar of flame right? Only question being, is it good enough to waste all my scrolls of enchant weapon on? eveningstar is the best base 1handed mace right? (better than demon whip? of which I've also found one of draining).

I'd take the flaming as an all-purpose weapon, swap to the antimagic when facing off with a magic-using enemy. Demon whip you take if there's a strong brand on it that does flat damage, like electrocution, pain, or chaos. Don't forget you can just roll the dice and rebrand the flaming one too.

Flaming is randart, that's why it's +9 and I have enchant weapon scrolls leftover, so I can't rebrand it.
I could rebrand the demon whip of draining or the eveningstar of antimagic though.
