Recovering

The first day after the disaster is spent, hurriedly, burying the dead, though some spend time searching for their loved ones, finding out who survived among the many missing people. Some of the colonists are found in areas near the camp, having reached the shore after the ship collapsed but frozen to death afterwards, soaking wet and lost in the wind and darkness only a short walk away. The dead are pushed off to sea, sinking in the freezing water- there is no time to dig graves, and though the members of the Kotzar's cabinet are careful not to say this around the common folk, they will attract fish. One colonist announces himself to be a pastor, and holds a short service. A few sections of pipe are scavenged from the steam turbine to rig into a short flagpole, and the flag of Vlanlados is raised at half mast. The colonists who aren't too grief-stricken to work, work themselves breathless to accomplish this all in a matter of hours.

The Industrious Spirit of Vlanlados

There is no more time to grieve. Night will fall soon. Enough, and just barely enough, igloos are constructed before dark to get everyone out of the wind. It's overcrowded, though. There isn't even space for a fire in most igloos, the sick are bundled together but still not completely separated from the healthy- in fact, hygiene procedures are less than ideal in general without the doctor around to be a definitive authority on such matters.

For the rest of the week, three main tasks are carried out. First, warm coats for an expedition are prepared, of the chicken leather and chicken feathers from the supplies (thankfully there were enough spools of thread left to manage). The chicken-leather coats are lumpy and misshapen despite the women doing their best job, it's a lousy material to work with. 20 coats are completed, and still quite warm, after a couple days of work 10 people are sent after the direction of the hunters and 10 after the miners. They haven't got tents, and will need to bury themselves in the snow or dig caves to stay warm- hardly ideal, but most Vlanladosians experienced in traveling in the wilderness have done it at least once before.

The boats are dedicated primarily to bringing in salvage, before the sea carries it away. [1d6:3] Lots of soaked deck planks are recovered- these will be valuable for burning, and maybe for building materials, as long as they're dried in front of a coal fire first. There's some metal things recovered from shore as well- stuff like silverware, or spare screws, which was kept in wooden boxes. [1d6:4] Furthermore, there's some cot mattresses and hammocks recovered as well, they're small but have valuable cotton stuffing and fabric. Everything else seems to be at the bottom of the sea. A solitary boat is dedicated to fishing as well, bringing up 350 rations (700lb) of fish and krill.

Everyone who isn't busy boating, sewing, tending to the sick, or searching for the expeditionary parties gets to work making igloos, led by the architect. That's about 200 people, and by the end of the week they have successfully made enough igloos for everyone. The igloos are still not totally ideal shelters, especially for the recovering sick colonists, but they prevent people from freezing.

It is Day 34

Word comes back from the two expeditions which had gone out earlier. [1d6-1:3] The hunting expedition didn't catch the worst of the storm, they're mostly okay, though they lost a sled (supposedly, they're pretty sure a polar bear dragged it off in the night while it was full of meat, but they didn't feel up to tracking it down). The two sleds plus their backpacks were loaded up, though, with a total of 1000 rations. Luckily they arrive mid-week, because the colony is running out of food. Though they're exhausted with the weight of a ton of food between the 18 people, their coming is celebrated. [1d6-1:0] The other expedition wasn't so lucky. The people sent to find them found the excavator half-buried in a land slide, the tractor protruding from the water on what appears to be a collapsed ice shelf nearby, and one broken tent with a couple of frozen corpses. The rescue team returned empty-handed.

The state at the colony is again such that there are several problems. The frostbitten people have gotten worse, they may die soon without amputation, and a few of the sick people passed away. Moreover, a number of the people stuffed together in the igloos have become ill as well, with a fever, although some of the people who were already sick have recovered as well. Also, thanks to the efforts of the hunters, people have mostly been able to get through the week without resorting to half rations. Unfortunately, someone really should have told them to eat half rations. In the morning when you look in the food-storage igloo, you find only a few scraps left. For a more minor concern, the lantern oil is also going to run out  eventually.

All the colonists have taken to calling the area in which the igloos and supplies are situated "Shipwreck Camp". While this is apt, you may want to think of a less depressing name.

Now that shelter is secured, it would be prudent to dedicate as many people as possible to finding food.

Okay, we need a hothouse for the sick. Preferably made of stone. On that note, a kiln as well to make cement. For that, we should probably get the excavator. Let's send a bunch of strong folks to dig out the excavator with some construction/mining tools, and pull out the tractor before it's too late. All others not involved in caring for the sick or overseeing government should go fishing.

We can improve igloos by lining the interior with leather. Sacrifice some chicken leather coats and/or tents to make igloos that actually keep the sick warm.

I declare myself Coatzar and forbid that We still need the tents and coats for sending out hunting parties and the like. I think that we should try making warmer igloos from stone instead, or digging them into the ground instead of building them from the snow.

We should also recover the tractor/excavator ASAP, before they sink into the water or something. Don't forget, they're our only machinery and the best way of getting more coal to stay warm.

As for the lamp oil issue, we could possibly try refining seal/penguin fat or blubber into oil? Not sure if we have people who know how to do that, or if that falls under the expert hunter's bailiwick. Also, as what passes for "intellectuals" into Vlanlados, I assume that we would at least know that polar bears exist in the Arctic, not the Antarctic. An elephant seal is certainly strong enough to drag off a sled, but it's difficult to see how it would do so (or why). With our luck, it's probably a shoggoth that took our meat.

Also, with our luck, we'll probably bump into these guys and they'll tell us to get off rightful British soil or something.

Empty Stomachs

First things first, food. After discovering the food storage completely empty, the Kotzar alerts everyone that they will be eating half rations this week. Also, that means skipping breakfast until someone catches some fish. People don't take it well- there's even some booing in the crowd. That's the downside of being the figurehead.

All eleven boats, and 110 people to man them, are dedicated to fishing. To feed everyone half rations, you'll need about 2000 rations' worth. The fishers work hard, and pull up fully 3100 rations between all of them- enough for about half the colonists to eat full rations. Most of the extra food is stockpiled, but the sick colonists are given full rations to help them recover. The important thing is that, while hungry, nobody is starving.

There is some talk of improving the shelters. There's enough igloos for everyone, but a lot of people desire more warm and dry shelter, especially to help the sick recover. The idea of disassembling the chicken coats to make a leather interior for igloos is discussed, but there's not a lot of coats to go around and the colonists who have been using them guard them jealously- besides, there's a lot of expeditions planned and they're sort of a necessity for spending a long time out in the open. The idea of digging igloos into the ground is also discussed. The snow over most of the camp is pretty shallow: all of the Antarctic, even the peninsula, receives very little precipitation, and any place with deep snow is somewhere that snow has settled over multiple years. Underneath the snow in the camp area is a layer of small shale stones and gravel above shale bedrock- pretty difficult to dig into, but not impossible. On the other hand, the idea of sleeping on rough-hewn stone doesn't appeal to most colonists, except for seven with bushy beards who are peculiarly keen on the idea. One test-igloo, dug into the rock, is completed. It's out of the wind, and well insulated, but has a few spots where puddles tend to form inside. While not a lot of colonists were dedicated to the work, it was slow going and took all week.

In the hospital igloos, the numbers of sick are rising. While some of the sick people are recovering at a reasonable rate, many of the underfed workers are getting sick. It seems that half rations aren't good for a person's immune system, especially when they're out of the freezing water or trudging around in the snow. The frostbitten colonists have already turned gangrenous- amputations have to be made. With lots of fresh bandages, and carpentry tools for the surgery, the colonists assigned to the unpleasant task of wilderness nursing get to work. The screams echo through the entire camp. Of the eight frostbitten colonists, three die from the amputation attempt, and three have to have so much taken off that they're not going to be much good for any work. Two get out with just some missing fingers and toes, and return to the workforce.

Some of the colonists are set to making more sleds. [1d6:3] The new sleds, constructed of cot frames with a "deck" of taut ropes, are fairly lightweight, and should serve well enough.

Equipped with three sleds, a hunting party of nine is sent after the seal colony. [1d6:2] They return almost empty-handed, having shot only one seal, worth about 100 rations. The colony has apparently relocated somewhere else.

Another party is sent to try and excavate the excavator. They've brought nine people, with the other three tents, coats, a sled, mining tools, and all of the chains, as well as two weeks of rations. [1d6:?] They won't be back until next week.

It is Day 41

The mood in New Vlanlados, as the camp has been named, is turning poor. Most of the colony is still getting over the deaths of friends and family, and now on top of that, there's not enough food. Nearly everyone is tightening their belts this week. On accounting for the amount of food in storage, it also seems that some people have been sneaking in some extra meals, as inventory comes up about 200 rations short, but it's tough to say if this is the result of a few problem colonists or if everyone is grabbing a bit occasionally.

[1d6:1] Making morale even worse, it seems that some belated effect of bacterial decay has caused the bodies dumped in the bay to float back up to the surface. Half-eaten by sea life, dozens of rotten corpses greet the colonists one morning. One of the colonists who had begun calling himself a pastor says that the bodies have not been properly laid to rest, and the souls of the dead are damned- and furthermore, it's all the fault of the colonists who decided that other labor needed to come before digging proper graves (that's you.) Some of the colonists have begun holding a sabbath, and organized themselves into what they call "The Church of the Lost Colonists".

[1d6:5] The weather has been good this week. Spring is coming in just a couple weeks, and it may bring storms.

Your path ahead isn't totally clear. However, you will need more food, however you intend to get it, it's unclear how long the colony can last on half rations. You're also running out of coal, but hopefully the team at the excavator site will be able to do their job. Back at home it's clear that morale is becoming a problem. If living conditions don't improve, colonists will continue to make trouble.
