Did undead get re-buffed in 44.11?
« on: July 03, 2018, 10:09:39 am »

I just lost a young but decently strong fort to an undead osprey.  Back in the "old days", of course, this would be unremarkable.  Since the rebalance, though, my two trained hammerdwarfs with full armor and silver hammers should have taken it out with no problem.  It slaughtered both of them and welped the fort.  Did I just get a series of unlucky rolls, or has something changed?

Osprey are kinda large, so far as normal birds go, but nothing exceptional.  Do you have the combat logs?  Might have been force transfer getting some lucky shots.

Haven't seen a difference to v0.44.10 yet. A single undead osprey though? Should be shot down to the ground with one swat from a good hammerdwarf. The beginning ones though (or mercs before training) could be killed, reasonably.

Mystery solved.  After looking at the logs, it was a giant osprey corpse, not just an osprey.  I also got some bad rolls, since every hit they performed bruised the muscle and bone (useless on undead) but didn't pulp, and the giant osprey claws were... rather more effective.

Do undead birds fly? I suppose no, but if they do, then I'm curious how effective would be shooting them down, by damage to wings. Normal giant birds are usually killed by falling damage, meaning they are often one-shot killed by marksmen, if they hit the wings (or a painful place). Zombie birds are much tougher, and do take less damage, on the other hand the falling damage is so big...

If you consider that there are two types of generated undead birds (those that enter the map because all new creatures entering from that biome are generated as undead, and those that die and reanimate because of the biome interaction), the ones that enter the map as undead do fly (undead albatrosses and osprey are common for evil oceans, but they usually die in melee as they descend to attack when dwarfs are in sight, and so are a good source of leather and meat as they have not rotted yet). I do not recall reanimated birds flying, and that may be due to wing damage.

I had an invading necro reanimate a flying critter, and it did indeed fly (0.44.03-05).

Can confirm, undead birds do fly.

I've made a necro-training area, with enough headroom for flying birds to actually fly, but I have problem with obtaining bodies fit for reanimation. The giant birds are so fragile. Probably breeding them and slaughtering would be easier.
