Has anyone played Craft the World? (on steam)
« on: June 22, 2018, 11:42:03 am »

It bills itself as similar to Terraria and Dwarf Fortress, sounds great but I'm wondering if its actually any good? I've learned not to trust steam reviews.

Shallow when compared to dwarf fortress or just shallow by conventional standards?

I feel like, on these forums, if it warrants a comparison to DF's complexity it gets it.

So he probably just means shallow overall.

I played it, and vaguely remember it being fairly shallow as well.  I don't remember well enough for specifics though.

I apparently have 40 hours in it, but it was some time ago so I don't remember details.  I do remember that I quite enjoyed it while it lasted, but it wasn't something I saw myself playing long term (and turns out I saw correctly).  The sort of game that's fun while you're exploring and discovering new things, but once you've done all the progression to unlock/do everything the appeal drops off fairly quickly.

I'd say it's worth it for the sale price (assuming money isn't super tight for you just now) if you like the general style of game - it's unlikely to be the next big thing for anyone, but there's some enjoyment to be had.

(also it looks like they've added some stuff - multiplayer at least - since I played)

Shallow overall.

There's a tech tree, stuff you can build,   periodic invasions (on a clock)... but all very simñlistic.

Think a very very simplified, 2D,  DF.  No real way to assemble megaprojects like in DF.
On the other hand it's not as cpu intensive and can be entertaining for a while

That's the 2D Ant-farm-style DF-like right?  It's alright.  One thing that I thought was super annoying is that it has a minecraft-style 'fill a 3x3 grid with things to craft items' thing, but as I recall you either get recipes through campaign mode (which I recall being super slow, but do not recall the specific reason) or just freeball it in a sandbox mode that I think doesn't tell you ANY recipes so you gotta alt tab to a wiki constantly, which sucks.  It's entirely possible I'm just dumb and missed something to make that less annoying, or that that's been changed since I played it, of course.

I liked what it did with rain though, I guess.    It'll rain every so often, which'll make puddles appear.  I think a few ponds in the game I played slowly rose and grew because of that, though the puddles also dry up I think.  I built my fort by digging a deep shaft and then digging into one side, so I think I had a little pond growing down in my mine as water slowly pooled down there.

It's a cute little builder game overall, and I remember mostly enjoying it, but I don't think it'll have you going 'man this fort I built is awesome' or anything.

It was a bit slow for my tastes but fun enough.

It did give Splattercat on Youtube his catchphrase of HAIDOO, however, so all is forgiven.

It's pretty terrible, but if it's cheap, it's worth a play.

The UI is awful. The lack of the ability to "quick craft" and having to manually drag ingredients to the crafting window (at least the first time you craft a thing) is just absurd.

After you beat the first world (unlocking massive amounts of tech, etc), you unlock the second world... and you promptly have to restart on that world from 110% scratch...

...Grinding the exact same shit all over again. Gotta make three tables to unlock an iron door, gotta craft 10 helmets to unlock armor, etc. The grind and the tech system would be fine if you didn't have to repeat it over and over again.

That having been said, it has a certain feel to it that reminds me of King Arthur's Gold (SNES), Lemmings, etc, and I like those games. Also, the sound is pretty funny, and the shit your Dwarves say is memorable. My girlfriend and I still say "Into Attack!", or whatever they mutter when they attack something, and "Noooooooooooooooooo" when they fall off of a ledge.

It is a fun little game ruined by the fact that you need to craft 50 of X to unlock the ability to craft Y. The whole game revolves around crafting junk you don't need, in amounts far larger than you can ever use, so you can unlock the stuff you actually want.

At least inventory isn't limited...

Anyway, past the crafting grind there is fun to be had, but there are better games.
