Stop the Madness!
« on: May 30, 2018, 10:47:27 am »

I am complete suspense: will my 5 year old fort survive the complete descent into madness long enough for the next update to patch the over-emotional dorfs?

I have taken all the usual precautions, met their peculiar needs & desires, decorated the fort like a mansion. Still, after a goblin siege (successfully crushed with minor losses), every dwarf has cracked, having seen one too many corpses of former sentients. The horror!

44.10 = the Emo update.

Please, Toady, for the love of Amok; stop the madness!

Sorry for off-topic, but since reading your posting I've got Iron Maiden - Can I Play With Madness stuck in my head, and I also feel an unstoppable urge to post the link here....

Really, DF and Metal are practically the same. Drunkenness, Death, Depression, Depravity, Despondence, Demons, Dementia, Darkness. And thats just the D's!

Toady's already fixed that for the next patch, and as for the fort surviving . . . put it on hold. It only moves forward when you play so if you go do something else, like gen a new world for adventure mode until the new patch arrives you should be better. Sort of. Right now they store eight memories in total and it's possible for one category to swallow up all eight slots. Your dwarves are probably seeing way more than eight bodies, so literally everything they remember is a dead body. If you had a limited amount of memory space in your head and somebody dropped you in the middle of a warzone, you'd curl up in the fetal position crying "all of life is death please kill me now" too.

Unless the new patch overwrites memories, picks the worst dead body and gets rid of the others from their minds, you're probably screwed until the next batch of migrants arrives.

I could put the fort on hold; but I am enjoying all the !FUN!. Actually, I have learned many lessons about dwarven psychology. In my next (44.11) fort, I expect the dwarves to be quite mentally stable, even happy. In the meantime, watching a mature fort descend into madness is entertaining, in its own way. If it does pull through 'til 44.11, it will have some very interesting stories to tell.

Mentioned it in another thread: There's a remove-stress command in DFHack to tide you over.

Were-transformations cure stress, right?
Just use lycanthrotherapy.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Though the script may need some editing to work correctly. Change -1000000 to something between -100000 and 10000.

As for the fortress to survive, you could make a copy of the save, continue to play/observe the original, and then revert back to the copy when 0.44.11 arrives.

Yeah the new system will have better memories separated by categories so we won't have so many awful thoughts taking all the dwarf-memory

Just use lycanthrotherapy.

I've tried this, the lycanthrotherapy causes more problems than it cures.

Namely, everything in the fort being smashed once a month.

Of course. Losing is Fun.

I have it on good authority that losing to madness is fun.
