Silk farms in 44.10
« on: May 29, 2018, 05:01:51 pm »

Can someone please post a screenshot of a working giant cave spider silk farm in 44.10? The designs on the wiki and elsewhere seem to not function like they did. I apologize if this info is somewhere I haven't found yet.

For context, I have a wild GCS and various tame bait animals and 'monsters'; no invaders yet.

Any help is much appreciated!

The only solutions I've found in 44.10 are to have the spider shoot at stationed dwarves, which is a pain. My current solution is using the bait chain as justice and letting prisoners get facefulls of silk.

My current fort has a functioning high-volume farm, exactly per the wiki's instructions with a beak dog for bait. Though I was using a web-shooting FB instead of a GCS, and I had trouble moving him around with bait doors. The farm worked so well that I had to shut it off under 44.09 to prevent damage to my FPS from too many items. I assume that it would work just as well in 44.10.

What specifically happened when you tried to set one up? Have you confirmed that the GCS will attack your bait, if there are no barriers between them?

It sounds like you're on an outdated version of the wiki page. I updated the wiki nearly 3 years ago when bait animals ceased to work.

The current wiki page also notes that forgotten beasts behave differently from GCS.

Oh, okay :) I might have done something wrong. I'll start over with the latest wiki design and see how that works. Thanks guys!

Did anyone do some ‼SCIENCE‼ which creatures work as bait right now ?

I found there are 3 GCS roaming in my caverns and I am trying to capture them, so they can be properly abused put to work.

( Okay, I made them appear in clusters and Egg-laying, I hope this works out ^^ )

Last time I played I had to use a captured idiot human escort as bait. It was a PITA to get him into a cage... on the bright side, the contraption I used to capture him was quite useful to dispose of deal with snotty nobles. He was sent as a gift to some sentient cave dwellers for the opening of their civilizations very first Zoo !

Since GCSs are Building Destroyer 1, you can use wooden doors as bait.  No live creatures needed.

Ah, I may have worded that poorly.

The question is not how to catch them, rather how to make them spew their silk, which needs a live target.
But which one are feasible in 0.44.10 ?

I haven't played in at least a year, but I would always use captured goblins, which should work if you are getting it to fire webbing at stationed dwarves. Just make sure you take any ranged weapons off of them.

I typically use undead supplied by necros as targets. They have the advantage of being targeted by trained GCS' as well as wild ones. However, I don't think I've set up a silk farm in 0.44.X, only in the last 0.43.X version I played. I'm not aware of anything having changed with regards to silk farms, though.

I got extremely lucky and caught a breeding pair of GCS (actually I caught a total of 4 + 5 cave crocodiles if I remember correctly. No idea what was going on in that fort) so I set up a breeding program, which freaking exploded all over my face went pretty well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Naturally I also wanted to set up a silk farm, but couldn't figure out how to get it to work. I more or less followed the design on the wiki

Spiders are wild and behind fortifications (they were trained at some point however). The doors are locked but not tightly closed.
As you can see, the left spider is completely ignoring the goblin prisoner volunteer. It also ignores military dwarves, civilians, animals and wild trolls. When I put in a wild troll, the troll smashed down the door and the spider happily munched on him. Which confirmed that it was indeed hostile towards the troll. It didn't shoot a single strand of web however.
I don't have access to undead unfortunately. I could try a FB as bait, but all I have at the moment are web slingers themselves or breath fire or nasty gases.

Am I missing anything?
Anyone having an idea as to why my farm doesn't work?

@JustSomeDorf: What's on the tiles under your spiders?

@Miles_Umbrae: Please don't quote large pictures, particularly when referencing the previous post.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

I'm on 44.12 but this also worked in earlier versions.

I use a trained spider with a semi-megabeast as bait.  Currently I have an ettin, but any semi-megabeast should work.  I've also had luck with non-fortress werebeasts, in any form.  One thing that I do is trap the bait between a wall and a bridge to hold it onto a single tile directly in front of the spider.  I wouldn't let my bait wander around the way yours permits.  It risks the bait getting out of the spider's view.  My experience is that spiders need a few ticks to see and silk the bait, and if the bait strolls away before the silk is cast, that doesn't work.

It's a little hard to see under the webs, but this is my (currently inactive) silk farm.  Again, the spider is trained and the bait was an ettin.  There is a fortification between the spider location and the bait location, which you can't see under the web.  The five webbed tiles in front of the bait are fortifications.
