Going with War Jabberers
« on: May 27, 2018, 05:22:32 pm »

So, I've been save scumming to spawn some cave dragons for a breeding pair (by killing the last monster on the cave so that the game spawns another monster and saving just before the monster actually spawns) because I spotted a cave dragon a little bit after discovering the cave where they spawn in but I didn't manage to cage trap it, so I've been dying to get them for a breeding agenda ever since. But... they just don't spawn! Even rarer creatures spawn in the cave but not a single cave dragon... Oh well, maybe I'm just not very lucky.

BUT ANYWAYS, the important thing here is that I eventually got tired of save scumming and decided to keep a breeding pair of Jabberers, I caught them in my traps while trying to save scum the cave dragons. I've heard a lot of people praising them and after looking at some info about them I was wondering "Are they better than cave dragons?"

Not individually, of course. I'm talking about how Jabberers grow up to be almost the same size as an elephant through the course of one year. Cave dragons can be a lot bigger than Jabberers. But they take a long time to grow, right? Also, I think Jabberers are easier to find.

What do you guys think?

Jabberers make a pretty good dog replacement.

What is the best war animal, taking into account breeding and raising time? I imagine cave dragons would not be at the top of the list, but what would be?

Always a safe default assumption in this game

You don't want anything with the Meanderer tag, like elephants, rhinos, and tigers. They move slowly and are unlikely to reach the battle in time.

Jabberers are best when it comes to building an army quickly.
They grow quickly, as shown by their raws :
Code: (Jabberer) [Select]
[BODY_SIZE:0:0:5000]
[BODY_SIZE:1:0:2000000]
[BODY_SIZE:2:0:4500000]
Which means they size 2M at 1yo, and also Elephant-size at 2 !

Compared with Cave dragons (CD) :
Code: (Cave dragon) [Select]
[BODY_SIZE:0:0:6000]
[BODY_SIZE:1000:0:15000000]

CD grows very slowly. But eventually they are 3times bigger than Jabberers (I've never heard of a thounsand yo fortress though)
But CD are worst because they grow 150k each year. 150k is an adult Gorilla worth of Volume.
-> So at 1yo, your CD is a Gorilla's size. Decent, but stupid compared to the 2M of the Jabberer (13 times more !)
-> At 2 yo, your CD is 300k, Donkey size. And Jabberer beast is adult with 4,5M (15 times more than CD)
-> CD slowly outgrows the Jabberer and is better after 30 years. A very long time for a fortress in my experience.

(Sure at birth, they are about equal, but who would send a new born into a fight ? )

Here ! I go borred, so I made a little array of CD size VS Jabberers
AgeCD size% of Jabberer size
1150k7,5%
2300k6,7%
3450k10%
4600k13.3%
5750k16,6%
.........
294,35M96,7%
304,5M100%
314,65M103,3%
.........
100015M333,3%
