Last Argument of Kings

Behold the Capital of the High Kingdom of Argas. Or what remains of it. For the Fortified Town of Arg Caís is a mirror of the state of its kingdom. Decrepit and rundown, it looms over the Plianth Sea like an overgrown gargoyle, something that should have been abandoned to ruin long ago. And yet here it stands defiant and bustling.

For the Argr brings agriculture and trade. Stretching almost across a mile at its mouth, the Argr is the lifeline across much of what once what was Argas. But here at its culmination the riverine trade and the farmlands hugging close to its fertile floodlands ensure the survival of those who would still cling to the dream of a Thousand King.

It is here in the High Hall of Arg Caís that Tristan first of his name, of the line of Saleon has ascended his throne.

The leak kept dripping. Tristan stared as another drop of water formed in the crack. The castle was old, and maintaing it was a constant battle.
His eyes turned to the crowd in front of him. Just yesterday he had received the Godslayer and the Sceptor of Rule, and the crown placed on his head by the High Priest.

Just a week ago, his father was murdered. And now Tristan had to deliver justice.

His Uncle, Marcellus Saleon,  kneeled before him, chained and escorted by two knights. He had aged significantly in the week since he was found standing by his father’s body, a bloody dagger clutched in his hands. His guilt was never in doubt, but his motives were murky, and all waited to see what punishment the new King would mete out.

The court lawyer began the introductions, and ordered the prisoner to speak. Marcellus remained silent, his face stoic. The lawyer sighed and invited any witnesses to come forward.

Tristan holds trial for his uncle Marcellus for murder of the previous King.

"It matters not what twisted motive possessed this man to slay his king and brother. His guilt is unquestionable, and his sentence should be carried out as soon as possible. Every second he draws breath is an offence before the gods."

Laranth did not shout, but the anger in his voice was obvious. He and the former king had been friends; one of the few friends Laranth had. Upon hearing of the murder, he had made haste to Arg Cais- and advised the new king to immediately execute the traitorous uncle.

Yshuis: The North

If one were to travel west along the fertile farmlands of the Argr eventually one would come across one of its many tributaries, the Ys. Barely able to afford some riverine trade it leads into one of the poorest regions of the kingdom, Yshuis. Argas not being a wealthy, large or important kingdom to begin with, should tell one everything that needs to be known about this decrepit region. Still, Yshuis endures and endures well all things considered. Bordered to its West and North by mountains it forms the Northern Frontier of the Kingdom. Passes leading further north lead into lands too poor for regular agriculture.

The Capital of the Duchy forms Kouhald, less a city and more an overgrown castle, it forms one of the first lines of defense of the kingdom against raiding tribes from the mountains. But even a castle as strong as Kouhald will not protect from the darkness of the long nights and the grim weather they carry with them.

"Your Majesty, your word is law. If you believe that the guilt of this man is evident, then let the axman carry out his duty."

Lord Alexei was the second one who spoke up. A man of normal stature but wearing an thick fur coat, which added to his shoulders, making him look bigger than he was. His bearded face bore a thin smile as he stared at Marcellus with his blue eyes and then back at the king.

"However, if you wish this trial to be a formal show of your land's laws, where peers of the land judge him, let us cast our votes as a jury on this man's guilt. I see him as guilty of foul murder and treason, and as such, worthy only of death."

Lacie leaned on the balcony watching the trial from above, it was a pointless affair really. Everyone knew the man's guilt, this was just a show for the public and the new king was the centre of it all. Her eyes went towards Tristan and she studied him, he wasn't exactly an impressive figure but that was to be expected. He was new at this after all, this was going to be his first major test. Underneath her mask she smiled down at him, wondering what his choice would be. Death was the obvious one, it would make him look strong and give the people satisfaction.

She however was hoping for imprisonment, the bastard hadn't talked yet and there were still so many unanswered questions. If there had been other people behind this plot, it would be good to know about them and Marcellus was their only link. Still it would be interesting to see which one Tristan chose, it would be very revealing about what kind of man he was.

The trial came to an end. His Uncle Macellus’ guilt is obvious, no matter the reason. Tristan stood to his feet. He stared into the man’s eyes. Memories of playing with his Uncle in yard, sparring with weapons or just running around with his cousins. His Uncle was a good man, but whatever caused this betrayal lead to his corruption.

Tristan stood to his feet.
“ Macellus Saleon, you are found guilty of regicide and fratricide. Our laws forbid the shedding of family blood, but your crimes deserve death. “

Tristan took a deep breath.
“You are revoked of your name and title. You are no longer a Saleon, you are a nobody. Tomorrow you will face the axe. “

Tristan dismissed the court, and headed back to his room. He looked up at his spymaster, Lacie Illiavan, and nodded. He would have her attempt a last interrogation of his condemned uncle.

He walked past his cousins, Marcus and Marissa. She was sobbing, and he glared as Tristan walked past. They would not soon forgot this.

He sighed and begun to make his way to the training yard. He needed to clear his head.

Give Spymaster Lacie task to interrogate his uncle before his execution.

The training yard was occupied. At least, one of the archery ranges was. And a few on either side of it, but they weren't technically in use.

*thunk* *thunk* *thunk*

And as you can see, yes, it is fully capable of firing its crossbow not only quickly but accurately. Yes, I am aware that they are not in a bullseye, if you'd actually take the time to look you'll see those bolts make an equilateral triangle. Oh, when it's firing at a target you're all so quick to scorn its ability, but when I ask you all to look down there, you're worried it'll become a killing machine... fine, I've got a ruler, I'll show you all myself.

Erin was showing off one of his metal men. A handful of minor nobles, and a small scattering of servants besides, were all vying for a spot to see it work.

He has yet to notice the king.

Lacie nodded back towards Tristan, looks like he went for the obvious option. A shame, but she would have to work with it. Slowly she climbed back down from the balcony and followed the soldiers that dragged the disgraced noble away. It was a long walk to the dungeons, they wanted to keep the prisoners away from civilised folk. To pass the time she began to hum, the sound muffled slightly by her mask. She continued until they finally reached the condemned man's cell,
"Now" her eyes met his, "Either your last hours can be comfortable, or they can be hell. It's up to you. Tell me why you did it."

Alexei followed the king as he was rising from his throne and heading out of the chamber. He looked at the royal guards and nodded, who let him pass. Royal presence was not an easy one to gain an acces to, but Alexei had his reasons and means.

"Your Majesty, a moment of your time." Alexei marched in step with the king, seemingly wanting to talk as they walk. "It might be early, but I was curious as to your policies for the realm's treasury. After all, your father did not leave a large purse for you, and if we are to make the kingdom stand tall, we have to think of that first and foremost."

Lacie

Marcellus looked back, a manic, triumphant grin plastered on his gaunt, starvation haunted face

"Why you ask? Because the Blood of Royalty is worth more than that of goats. And why settle for one if you can have two for the price of one?"

With a speed belying his gaunt figure, he headbutted one of the guards and kicked the other, his bindings coming undone, he revealed a stiletto hidden up his sleeve.

before Lacie can react he rams the stiletto into his own heart. His knees giving way to his weight, he looks up at the spymaster and despite the blood in his mouth his voice rings clear as a bell.

"The True King Rises!" and with that ends the life of Marcellus No-Name.

King Tristan looked at Lord Alexi, “Truthfully, I have not had much time to consider new policies for the Kingdom’s economy. My Father didn’t pay much attention to it. Trade over our rivers has always been our lifeblood. What are your thoughts?”

"Well, Your Majesty, my thought would be to appoint an able treasurer to pursue ways of making coin for the realm. he would also investigate trade opportunities with other countries beyond our borders.

Alexei smiled. "If you have not selected a candidate, I would like to submit my humble self for the position."

Lacie quickly recovered from her surprise, she glared towards the guards and snapped
"Get the king, now!" after they scrambled away she let out a sigh and crouched down next to the body. "Well at least this confirms one thing, you weren't alone in this murder."

Shortly after the trial, Laranth, wandering aimlessly through the castle, passes by the training yard. Seeing the crowd, he stops to watch the proceedings. After observing in silence for a while, he steps forth to address the inventor.

"A most impressive device you have brought before us. But tell me, for the cost of one such metal man, how many soldiers' wages could I pay? For that matter, how many mouths could I feed?"

((I was waiting for the king to react first, but evidently he has been waylaid))
