Progress At Sierra
Ground troops at Sierra gain 4 dominion.

Progress At November
Ground troops at November gain 4 dominion.

Holding at Juliett
Ground troops at Juliett become the first to observe a Liiran invasion force.

It's rather remarkably similar to an orbital bombardment.

Dozens of hardened projectiles are fired into the planet, their source in orbit and well beyond the GREAT regiment's means of scanning or classifying, and bury themselves deeply. Seismic sensors detect continued reverberations long after the initial bombardment, as though the projectiles were... digging themselves deeper into the planet.

Within hours, sinous tendrils begin growing out of the impact sites and lace around the perimeter like the frills of a venus flytrap. A short few days later, the first of their infantry boil out of the ground.

The Liiran infantry are definitely not Liir. Eight-legged and low to the ground, they resemble something more akin to particularly fleshy ants or overgrown centipedes- and they crawl over terrain with an unnerving jerking gait- alternating between sudden motion and complete stillness seemingly without transition. Six clawed legs give them envious traction and ability to cling to vertical surfaces, and their two forearms appear to be armed with some kind of thermal beam weapon- though Gaian infantry seldom see it used. Overall, they seem fleshy and susceptible to small-arms fire- but there are a lot of them and they have the unnerving propensity to burrow into and out of cracks and crevices.

Worse, more than one Gaian scouting report shows smaller, paler, and softer looking specimens- indicating that these creatures are rapidly breeding on site.

There are no hostilities between the two forces, and as long as the Gaians move back whenever the creatures approach, they seem harmless enough- but their alien movement and swarming numbers make the Gaians on the ground very glad they don't have to fight through them.

Progress at Romeo
Ground troops at Romeo gain 3 dominion, reduced from last round due to the shift in deployment.

Progress At Kilo
Ground troops at Kilo gain 4 dominion.

Progress at Mike
Ground troops at Mike gain 4 dominion.

Tango
Perhaps, had a poet been the first to lay eyes on the Tango system after crossing the Aperture, they would have described it as 'Numinous' or some other ten-penny word for the haunting feeling you get when you tread over a threshold that was not built for your feet, and over which you were never intended to cross.

The Pacemaster that first enters Tango, however, lacks a poet. In lieu of that, the crew swear and make superstitious warding gestures in a way that only a Pacemaster crew can- all done very carefully in order to not interfere with ship's functionality.

Tango's star burns quite cold- a massive red hyper-giant of staggering proportion. Considerably north of a billion miles in diameter, she burns an ancient light on a single, moonless world of considerable size floating far in her outer orbit. Yet that world is not the only orbital body in the system.

Hundreds of deltohedrons, oriented with their poles matching the sun, orbit silently. They vary in size, but not one is shorter tip to tip than a kilometer, and the largest is nearly thirty. Their material is akin to smoky glass, partially penetrable to sensors, but returning nonsensical readings after an inordinantly long delay. They don't seem to have any hostile function, or any function at all that the Pacemaster's meager sensors are capable of detecting, and the Pacemaster sidles on by on her way to drop troops off on the planet's surface.

Ground Landing
The entire surface of Tango is covered in the same material as the deltohedrons, sheets and sheets of the material butting up into fantastical mountain ranges of razor-edged splendor. Here and there a bizarre spiral of an unidentifiable metal whorls across the surface, but those exceptions are the only relief in the material.

It's rather unsettling when soldiers start realizing that this planet should at least be coated in a thick layer of stellar dust- unless the life on this planet consists of world-champion hide and seek roombas.

Progress on such a planet is exceedingly slow, and collecting survey data is impossible. There's no atmosphere, and all the readings on the glassy material return impossible and chaotic readings. Attempts to cut into the glassy material are partially successful, but it's insanely slow going that's quickly abandoned in favor of further exploration.

Credit to Kashyyk for this, reposting it here for both visibility and as what I am voting for this turn.

Quote from: Quantum Locked Hard Shield "Testudo"
Via abuse of a superconductor-based parlour trick, (also known as Quantum Locking or Flux Pinning) it is possible to suspend armour plates above a magnet, and with careful manipulation of the magnetic field, we can move the plates around.

The plates themselves are a depleted Transplutonic material, chosen for their resistance to electromagnetic radiation damage in its various forms, fitted to a room-temperature superconductor. As the plates can be moved easily, we don't have to armour an entire ship, instead we can shift the plates to face the enemy no matter which direction they come from. Gaps can be left between the plates for sensors and bores, and they can be moved out of the way to when hangers or turrets are ready to unleash their payload.

In addition, damaged armour plates can be shuffled out of the line of fire to be repaired whilst fresh plates are moved to the fore. If we are able to predict a particularly heavy attack, we can even stack plates on top of each other as well. Science Fiction may have believed in energy shields, but it turns out the middle ages had it right all along.

Now, Epee progress. A good part of me wants to only toss 1 die at it. Other parts of me are yelling 'but then we probably wouldn't be able to get as many!' and 'what if we roll a 1?!', so I'll begrudgingly vote for 2 dice. We could really use an actual anti-capital weapon now, and not be utterly reliant on fancy tactics to not lose engagements.

Being perhaps the initial proponent of 2 Epee dice and being convinced of our need to look back at our medieval roots to win space battles, I shall hop on board.
Lets revive the age of sword and shield!

Quantum Locked Hard Shield "Testudo"
[Time: 4 Progress: 6 Cost: 5]
In a bizarre turn of events, one of the esteemed members of the Gaian research bureau (who recently spent their sabbatical with exact location unknown, somewhere around Iris-Hong) has already been working on a hobby project with remarkably similar design parameters. Granted, there's not a lot that can be directly converted from his nearly mach-1 capable prototype hoverboard into the Testudo, but his work on advanced superconductor material design and electromagnetic pinning will be invaluable going forwards.

Testudo: 0/8 [4] | 80T + 10M + 30E | Rushed 0 Times | Nothing Invested

Prototype
[Efficacy: 4]
In a lot of more... elegant science-fiction carried over from Lost Earth, ships would have entire sections of their hull that simply magically hovered around the vessel. Heroes would have their equipment floating around them, waiting to be drawn. The Testudo is a step in that direction, albeit one of considerably less elegance.

A single testudo system consists of a single electromagnetic controller unit (T-ECU hereafter) and six thick kites approximately 5 meters across the primary axis. The front face of each kite slightly pyramidal, with the angle intentionally shallow in order to add some minor deflection without accidental deflecting a shot into the parent ship. The kite material consists of a thin hardened outer layer, primarily to spare the softer inner layers from incidental damage, and a thick core shield constructed from a ultra-heavy alloy with the principal components of U-238 and Fl-298. If the core shield is exposed, it is strongly recommended that any maintenance workers wear thick anti-rad gear.  A looped cross of superconductive material, as well as a pair of dedicated batteries, are fitted to the inward kite face.

The T-ECU serves two purposes. One, it serves as a home for the Testudo plates when not in use. The six plates can be tiled into a hexagon centered on top of the T-ECU unit for travel, charging, or cooling. Second, it and a chain of control dendrites across the hull project and manipulate the electromagnetic field that maneuvers the armor kites over the hull. Due to the armor plates largely occupying the surface of the hull, and the E-ECU dendrites primarily tapping the ship's already existing power grid, the system has a fairly low impact capacity impact that's primarily limited by additional coolant tanks and the electromagnetic field emitters themselves.

The issues with the system are two-fold, and have to deal with the energy of electromagnetic pinning and the temperature control of the superconductors on the kites. The pinning issue comes into play when a pinned shield is moved by a physical force. If the force is less than that of the electromagnetic pinning field, the shield stays in place. If it's much greater, it can cause the shield to break-free and be sent skittering across the EM field geometry. To compensate for this, all T-ECUs have a high-energy pinning mode, which consumes a great deal more power but can hold the kites stable under far greater stresses. However, this mode also causes the shield heat to increase steadily due to inductive flux, which leads to the second problem.

The superconductive circuit used to create the pinning effect will destabilize at temperatures greater than 200C. While the shield material itself is capable of absorbing a formidable amount of heat, and the circuit is insulated from bulk of the shield, this means that if the shield takes sustained high-energy fire, or is held in its high-energy pinned state for too long, the super-conductor will fail and the kite will become just one more chunk of hot-metal floating in space. Space being space, it will take it a considerable amount of time to cool down.

Another, more minor issue, is that the design tolerances for the kite docking system are fairly tight, and structurally damage kites may have considerable difficulty being redocked with their T-ECU- limiting the ability to cool and recharged damaged kites in combat.

Quantum Locked Hard Shield "Testudo": | 200T 0O 50M 80E 0S | Capacity: -8 | Power: -10/-40 | An Electromagnetic control system designed to control and pin six 5-meter tesselating kites of advanced ultra-heavy alloy around a ship's hull as mobile armor. Highly effective at stopping directed radiation weapons, but if the emitters aren't operating in high-power mode the kites can be knocked around by kinetic impacts.  Kite shields themselves will lose their superconductive abilities (and thus the ability to be controlled) at relatively low temperatures, necessitating frequent cycling of kites.  High power mode will also cause kites to heat up merely by being active. Damaged kites have some difficulty in being returned to their parent control unit for cooling and recharge.
