Prismatic Bore Drive
So. Our bore designers have gone on a cocaine fueled bender again, and this time they didn't come back to us screaming about QUANTUM anything. This time, they are screaming about Bore Space Slices, Frequencies and Fractal Graphs. The jury is still out on which is worse. But anyway, their idea is a bore drive that generates a prime bore, and a bunch of sub bores. The prime bore exists in, quoting from one of our scientists who is currently on tranquilizers, “a frequency band in bore space that allows it to encompass multiple other sub slices that are capable of sustaining a bore reaction, and all are calculable through the same fractal algorithm” Translation: We can make a bore that leads to other bores all at the same time, but we have to set the prime bores “sub frequency” right before we enter to travel to a specific bore exit. The drives dimension maxes out at roughly destroyer size, as it and frigates are the main classes of ships that would get the most out of such technology, as smaller does not have the space, and capital ships are not suited for such maneuvering.

So, the pre-game turns are ending and I don't know of any completed entries for the first event.

Has anyone done some writing of the initial expedition, beyond what was in the proposals for the empire to begin with?

Edit: Looking back through discord logs, saw that Chiefwaffles was doing something of that nature. Still doing it?

MemoriamEvery first day of the Gaian year, a global holiday is observed: The Day of Sparks. On this day, gaians focus not on science, engineering or even boreholes. They focus on what occured to bring them to where they are, both alone and together. Simple candles in small, simple bowls are lit. They are placed in windows, floated down rivers and streams, flown in the air on paper balloons, even placed in some of the satellite installations. As these candles burn, Gaians gather together in groups, some as couples, families, or all the way to mass gatherings in park squares, numbering in the thousands. Together, they remember. Stories of the past are shared, individual tales or familial stories, but also the initial experiences passed down generation by generation of what it was like on the long path to Gaia. Together, Gaians remember the most important lessons they have learned as time goes on. And as one, they look out into the stars, gazing out to where Earth may still lay, and they Remember. On this day, Gaians bear their memories to the stars, and simply say just by standing there as one, that we will not let our spark be extinguished from this universe. That the Gaians will not go quietly, and when anyone comes to challenge us again, we will not let the light be extinguished.

Rogers ducked under the support beams holding together the hull of the U.N.S. Foray as he made his way into the cockpit.
"Still nothing?" He questioned as he sat down and swiveled his pilot's chair into position.
His copilot responded without moving from her steel gaze out the cockpit window. Still nothing.
It's been three months since last contact with Earth. Three months since the last Boreship left the space around Gaia taking reassigned personnel and data with it back to Earth. Three months since supplies had been delivered. Something wasn't right.

The scientists' first reactions was something wrong with Boredrives. What else could stop a great Boreship from traversing the great distances between Gaia and Earth? But all the experiments and research done since the last Boreship yielded nothing in that direction. The Foray would put the theory to rest once and for all. The galaxy's smallest boredrive, fit onto its own frigate. It took so much space and required so much power that only Rogers and his copilot Parker were the only ones aboard. This was a breakthrough that probably would have taken years -- decades -- to reach conventionally. But desperation, science unhindered by bureaucracy, and a notable amount of danger allowed it to happen now instead.

Beep.
Parker looked down from her vigil and to the screen. "Looks like Central finished and sent us the finished calculations. Boredrive is at 99% charge. Start the countdown?"
"Start the countdown."

5.
Rogers looked ahead.
4.
His eyes narrowed as he watched the unending void of space lying in front of the Foray.
3.
What happened?
2.
Why hasn't Earth contacted the expedition?
1.
Rogers guesses that he'll see soon enough.

Boring commenced. Genesis created.
Reality distorted itself as the Foray passed through the event horizon of the borehole. Then it arrived. In the distance, Earth could be made out.

Yet beyond that, nothing.
The comms console still showed nothing from Earth. Nothing! It should be filling with thousands of messages now, even if only extracted from radio broadcasts powerful enough to be reaching the borehole at this time. But nothing.

The Foray's thrusters fired to move it closer to Earth
Johnson and Parker stared at the console as a single message came into view.
A warning.
Telling them to stay away from Earth. For their own sake. There had been more, but it was garbled beyond comprehension. Then the scans started to come in. The most startling result was the lack of results. Sure, the sensors weren't entirely accurate at this range but there were just no signs of life on Earth. No signs of energy. Nothing.

The rest, like everything preceding it, is history. The two pilots made the wise choice to turn around before whatever got Earth could seize the Foray and learn of Gaia. But they didn't forget what they saw, and the rest of Gaia never will either.

Meet John.

Johns is a J-Z251/B class Regime member. He is under the command of the Department of Sustainability (agriculture). He doesn't vote. He has a boss, who he doesn't really interact with. His boss is about the level of a small-town mayor, here, and interacts with John but not in-depth and not frequently.
John's role is "food production." He is allotted resources from the higher-up sections of the Regime, and has a changing quota (based on upper politics usually) for food sent up for use in the Regime, but the quota is fairly small and a lot of the food is sold to or traded with other members.
John cares about politics. He, again, doesn't vote, but he still has a say. Through various means of influence, whether through the bureaucracy in official channels, exploiting hulls in the cracks of the Regime's structure, using his own power and resources, or just plain voice of him and the people; he has a notable (yet very minor) degree of influence within local parts of the Regime which, if he wants, can be traded upwards to give him increasingly smaller amounts of influence at higher levels within the Regime government. It's through this influence that he and other citizens in the Regime can affect politics to move it in the direction they want.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

HOLI to HOLLY
[Efficacy: 3]
Working with HOLLY is a very different experience to working with HOLI. On the good side, you actually get the impression that HOLLY is doing real work in the background- whereas HOLI more bumbled about when prodded. Where HOLI was informal and somewhat out of touch, HOLLY is razor focused and requires that all standards be adhered to. This is something of an issue for off-duty Gaian personnel, whose regard for protocol standards is roughly on par with a Gaian engineer's regard for safety standards.

Aside from a few quirks, like refusing to answer to anything other than 'Captain Short', and periodically sending emails to the ship's commander about suspected human infiltrators, HOLLY is a definite step towards an effective VI. She's also a definite buzzkill, and 'effective' is a very relative term. Her abilities to assist the leading of a fleet are nearly as negligible as HOLI's, but she does provide a distinct bonus to drone fighters.

HOLI-COM is now HOLLY-COM. HOLLY-COM provides 5 more command points, and provides a skill bonus to drone fighters within the fleet.

Bumble Drones
[Efficacy: 5]
Bumble drones are, in essence, black and yellow combat engineers. Granted, while there are actual engineers assigned to the Bumble drones in order to add a human element and to control their work, testing has shown that all incidents where Bumble drones pick up droids and make them kiss is in fact operator 'error', and not a programming glitch.

Bumble drones are not nearly as flight capable as their space-borne brothers. Despite their wings, their lack of aerodynamic profile forces them to instead make use of quick hops of chemical thrusters in ground effect, buzzing forward by spurts and bounds instead of flying freely. This does not, however, greatly impede their abilities. Enhancement of the legs allows them to stride quickly in their work area, and their internal fuel cell reserves are sufficient for prolonged work before they have to buzz their way back to a cradle to get refueled and recharged. The toolset originally designed to scavenge and repair naval vessels serves well on the ground, allowing them to work easily with bulk material to either break through obstruction or to create simple structures quickly. Like the original, the bumble lacks the precision for detailed (re)construction, but is more than sufficient to create a reinforced bivouac.

While it can be used for scouting and light combat, its highly visible (and audible) profile and engineering toolset work strongly against it. A bumble might be big, and able to dissect a tank given enough time, but she's generally vulnerable to offensive countermeasures. In a dire emergency, a bumble drone can be rigged to detonate as a suicide bomb- but this is a terribly inefficient use of its abilities.

Despite its many capabilities, bovine stress testing has shown that the Bumble Drone is NOT suitable for veterinary work.

Bumble Drones:  50T 75O 150M 125E 0S | A pod of modified Honey Drones, refitted to act as part of a combat engineering group. Capable of limited burst flight to navigate, Bumbles are noisy, not terribly well equipped to fight, but extremely good at both simple construction and re/disassembly. Capable of limited scouting, but not effective against an enemy force due to being conspicuously large, brightly colored, and loud.

Another thing for consideration.

Messenger Torpedo System
The Messenger Torpedo System is meant to be a mainline "gun" of our ships, designed for medium hardpoints and using none of our very rare synthetics. Based on the anti-capital ship torpedoes used by our Hornets, but scaled up for ship batteries, the Messenger Torpedoes are nuclear missiles fired in salvos meant to, in cooperation with the Hornet-borne torpedoes, saturate point defense and break through. Ideally, a Messenger will make contact with an enemy ship and penetrate as deep as it can before detonating it's nuclear payload. The missiles are built fairly hardy in order to not detonate the instant it makes impact (and hopefully be a little resistant to weaker point defense or fighters).

Proposing this again.

“Postman” Plasmatic Torpedo
The “Postman” Plasmatic Torpedo is focused on one thing: the bang to buck ratio*. This is intended to be reasonably priced but effective delivery system to allow high damage against targets in space. The weapon itself is a multi stage chemical engine sheathed in bioplastic armor to keep weight down but not sacrifice over much on protection. The warhead itself is a director for a stream of high energy plasma generated by a fusion reactor.  The basic launch mechanism for the Postman is a small turret holding 4 Torpedoes in enclosed launch spaces or simple fixed launch crates of 4, though more can be added if there is space. Permanent Mountings also include re-loaders for the launch tubes. Targeting is provided by either the ship that launched the Torpedo, or a seeker head. The warhead itself is where things get good though. Using magnetic containment to siphon off plasma from a built in fusion reactor, which can be charged before launch or as it travels to its target. Once reaching the target, it can either be launched at the target from a distance, followed by a small control mechanism using magnetic fields to keep the plasma focused and coherent. Alternatively, it can continue on, and impact the target and burn through the armor of what it hits, and continue to exude plasma until the reactor runs out of fuel or is deactivated.

*Note: this weapon is not meant to engage deer or other similar creatures.

Update: it was discussed in the discord what the cost of the Postman would dip into the most, Energetics or Transplutonics. It was revealed by Draig that twas likely a mix of both. So take that as you will.

Quote from: 'Garrotte' Long Range Mono-Wire Missile
A native medium missile system, the 'Garrotte' is a multi-stage chemical rocket intended to reliably strike out to the edge of Standard Combat Range. Instead of a typical payload, the missile carries a spool of polarised, mono-molecular, carbon picotube razor wire, coiled around an electromagnet. When triggered the electromagnet repulses the wire, launching it in an expanding sphere. Anything struck by the wire is typically bisected or left with a criss-cross pattern of deep gashes.

I am not convinced by the plasmatic torpedo using a fusion reactor to produce a plasma stream as warhead ( why not a fusion explosive with a casaba style shaped warhead?)
And I don't think monowire plays well with the proposed mechanism.

Sounds to me like an option that should avoid the energetics issue and not be a nuke. ...heh heh, also I suggested the concept of a monowire missile.
