Seeing as there are no games on the queue and only one game in play, and I suspect there may be demand for a good beginner game, I've decided to put a new game into signups.
This is Mostly Vanilla Mafia. The premise: every player has a power role, and the power roles are either vanilla or Mostly Vanilla.
Vanilla roles include those such as Tracker, Cop, Vigilante, Roleblocker, JOAT, Bodyguard, Watcher, Strongman, Ninja, Godfather, Serial Killer, Cult Leader, Framer, Bus Driver, Reviver, Super Saint, Magistrate, and the like. Basic roles, commonly recognized.
If a role is Mostly Vanilla, it will be a vanilla role with a twist. A tracker that can only track people who voted them in the past day? A serial killer that also tracks their target? A cop that investigates their target's target, but isn't told who their target targeted? That sort of thing.
Setup rules:
What roles are in the game will not be made public at the start, with one exception: all roles that can cause a change in alignment will have their names publicized. I believe in fair warning, and surprise cults might provoke screaming.
What alignments are possible in the game will be made public. Here they are: Town, Mafia, Serial Killer, Mafia-Ally, Cult.
Each player will have a power role. There will be more vanilla roles than Mostly Vanilla ones.
Town win when all non-town players are dead.
Mafia win when they outnumber or match in number all non-mafia players, and no non-mafia killing roles still live.
Mafia-Allies win when mafia win.
Serial Killers win when everyone is dead, not necessarily including themselves.
Cult win when they equal or outnumber the non-cult players, and no non-cult killing roles(including mafia, as they have the mafiakill) still live. Note that cult with the ability to kill are terrifying and if a Mostly Vanilla Cult Leader grants the ability to kill, it will be under severe restrictions. Cult will not be able to convert Mafia players or Serial Killers, but may convert Mafia-Allies and Town.
Mafia and Cult both have a quicktopic they can use for private communication during the day or night. No non-Mafia players will be able to read the Mafia quicktopic, no non-Cult players will be able to read the Cult quicktopic. At least until game end.
The mafia have a night-kill that one of them can use per night. By default, using the mafiakill prevents using another action, but it's possible that a Mostly Vanilla role may have the ability to mafiakill and do something else at the same time.
This explains the basics.
Days will last 72 hours unless extended by a majority vote(which adds 48 hours), which can be done once per day. Each player also has a personal extension which can be used once per game to extend the day by 24 hours. Nights last 48 hours or until I receive and process all night actions. Time passing doesn't count during weekends.
Once you're dead, you may make one "bah" post in thread containing no game-relevant information, and no further posting until game end(or resurrection, in such a rare occurrence) is allowed. When you die, you will receive access to a dead chat in which you may discuss the game. If you revive by some means(a rare occurrence), you will not be allowed to continue viewing the dead chat. Honor system.
No editing of posts is permitted once they have been made, even to fix spelling mistakes. Similarly, directly quoting your role PM or PMs from the mod is not permissible, but you may paraphrase.
A player can sign up to play, to act as a replacement if necessary, or to become a spoiled spectator. Spoiled spectators will receive access to a quicktopic containing the secrets of the setup. If a player wishes, when they sign up to play, they may also choose to become a mentor. Mentors are experienced players with the additional job of teaching players the ropes of the game. Mentors may post(in thread and in chats) after death for mentoring purposes only.
When a player dies, their role flip will be accurate, regardless of any Mostly Vanilla shenanigans. Role flips may be obscured(a rare occurrence) but they cannot be falsified.
Do note that I'll be running whatever setup I create through Mephansteras(or any other experienced mods who'd like to offer feedback) to make sure it's balanced. The same goes for the game rules. If anyone has any questions or feedback, I'd love to hear it. The same goes for game flavor. If you like, when you go in, you can PM me... something. Whatever. I'll incorporate it into the game flavor.
If you decide to join the game, I'd like to throw in an optional objective: try to find someone else in the forums, or that you know in real life, that you think may be interested in playing mafia for the first time, and ask if they want to sign up for this game. This subforum needs new players, badly.
