Something heavier than an umbrella. Unless our umbrella is a sword sheath or something.

Raincoat... check. Lying at the side of the couch. Umbrella... check. Right in the closet where it should be.

CLANG

... bludgeon... hmm. The heaviest heftable thing you can think of is the toilet paper stand in the bathroom... check? Hmm... 2:03 AM. The rain outside is quieter than earlier, but you still don't want to be out without some cover. You set your phone in the breast pocket of your coat and go out your door, dual-wielding, as it were. Still pitch black outside, no signal bars. You can only see what's in the little cone of light from your phone before you. Not ideal... you walk with your erstwhile weapon held in front of you.

Advancing carefully, the rain tap-tapping on your umbrella, your light shortly shines on your car. BANG. The car looks totally unmolested, the sound seems to be coming from a bit further ahead. The dumpster? You lean around to get a view of the-

crackle crackle

Faint orange streaks arc down a shape before you in the darkness. A shape like a person, made of pure, depthless blackness. SLAM! By its own orange sparks you see its... arm slam into the lid. Doesn't seem to realize there's a latch.

"Dude, it's locked. You need to flip open the latch."

The... thing jitters, whirling around to face you. An orange, electric outline crackles around it, defining its blackness. BRRRRRT! It advances, arms outstretched, its form seeming to waver.

"I'm not sure what I expected to do at this point in the plan. Bye!"

Yeah that's alright we'll just be leaving. Depart at a walking pace, given that running away will usually make big things charge.

The thing lowers itself as if preparing to run, but the jittering of its shape seems to interfere with its movements, so its speed remains a walking pace. That's fine by you.

"Uh, heeey," you say, backing up. "Did I interrupt your dumpster diving...?" Hmm... you should think where you're backing up to: into the apartment complex, or down the drive and towards the street?

Into the apartment complex. Given that it was having trouble banging on a dumpster and didn't notice the latch, it probably isn't smart enough to pick a lock, nor strong enough to break down a door.

You start backing up towards your apartment, the thing still advancing on you. You start to gain a bit of distance, even walking backwards, though you fear tripping up in the rain. With relief you back into your apartment and shut the door. Then the deadbolt. The thing didn't seem to make any sound as it walked, so you're not sure what it's doing now.
