Labor for putting things into barrels/bins?
« on: May 13, 2018, 01:30:33 am »

My stockpile of food is filled with individual items of meat and prepared food that I would really like to have consolidated into barrels. Likewise my finished goods stockpile is loaded with individual crafts and tools that could easily be put into bins. All this is despite my furniture stockpiles being full of empty barrels and bins and pots. What do I have to do to get this better organized? Is there a hauling labor specifically for putting stuff into barrels and bins, or do I just have to wait for the dorfs to get around to it?

Sorry, but better organization in this case means quantum stockpile. Especially prepared food and meat would be better used with this method.

Said that, I haven't experienced problems with dwarves not putting things into barrels in current version 0.44.10 (where I allow that). In fact, they are eager to do so, after the barrel limit for a stockpile is raised, it seems to be their priority. If they don't do that, maybe make a temporary stockpile elsewhere, and link it so dwarves move items out of primary stockpile. Then reverse it.

Are you playing vanilla DF or some modded version? I 'm playing with LNP and had some similar issues.

Deleting the old stockpiles and assigning new ones seems to fix that.

edit: I'm talking about version 0.44.09

So the conclusion I'm getting here is that we use QSPs because dwarves can't pilot submarines.

Hmm. Yeah, playing 44.10 right now and dorfs are happily putting crafts into bins and meat into barrels whenever there's enough free. It seems to be a pretty high priority job right now.

What do you mean by "individual items of meat and prepared food"? If you actually meant stacks, they could be too large to fit in containers.

I'm using PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack with 0.44.09. DFHack is enabled. Not sure what part of that would cause this.

To give you an idea, here is a screenshot of one of my food stockpiles:

The meat seems to be in stacks of 5, though some stacks are smaller. The prepared roasts are anywhere from individual to stacks of 25. Can these not fit in barrels?

They can fit.  Could be you simply don't have enough containers.  Food & booze can use both wooden barrels & rock pots.  Trying queuing 30 of each and see if that helps.

Maybe you don't have enough free space to fit the barrels in the stockpile?

Maybe the stockpile isn't set to hold the max number of barrels.

Those stacks of 5 meat probably came from the trade caravan, which is why your food stockpile filled up quicker than the barrel-filling process could keep up. Barrel-filling is slow.

Check 'q' on the stockpile and 'R' to ensure it is set to the highest number of barrels (what Leonidas posted).

Check in 'p' to view stockpile settings for "reserved barrels". If that number is higher than the number of empty barrels in your furniture stockpile, then the problem is that all the empty barrels are being reserved for booze.

Barrel-filling can be sped up by having more barreled stockpiles, because each "not-full" barrel on a stockpile will trigger a job to "put item in barrel", and each stockpile attempts to keep at least one empty barrel on it. You could delete the right half of the stockpile and replace it with a second stockpile.

Also, if your setting for the "mix food" order is "No mix" then the barrel-filling process will be slower (more barrels need to be moved to the stockpile because less food is being put in each one).

Is this one huge  custom mixed stockpile? I see some items that look like ore scattered among the food. In that case that might be the cause.

Also in my case (same LNP version), I've noticed that a lot of the time this thing happened there were both barrels and scattered food on the same tiles.

Edit: I guess it acts, sort of like a QSP now that i think about it.

No, it's just a food stockpile. The ore is just because some ore that was mined out hasn't been picked up yet.

I definitely have enough containers. My furniture stockpile is stuffed with barrels and bins and pots of every sort.
Maybe the stockpile isn't set to hold the max number of barrels.

The stockpile is set to the max number of barrels. There are 9 reserved barrels for booze, and I have many more than that available. I do also have food mixing enabled.

I'm thinking this is likely what happened. I bought a lot of meat from caravans, and now there's no room for barrels. But also note that there are a lot of roasts in the stockpile, which were made by my own kitchen, and I would hope those would've been barreled. In an attempt to fix this, I've made another food stockpile for overflow. That stockpile is about half full of items outside of barrels and has no barrels whatsoever, despite being set for the maximum number of barrels. I have it set to give to the first stockpile, as the first is closer to where I want my food to be. Would that cause problems? It seems my dwarves just aren't prioritizing moving barrels to stockpiles when they have other things to move there. I haven't talked about it as much, but I have the same issue with bins in my finished goods stockpiles. I have quite a lot of empty bins in the furniture stockpile, but almost all of my finished goods are outside of bins.

... now there's no room for barrels...
This doesn't happen. The replacement barrel is put on the next tile, regardless of what individual items are there. This is why you will see some tiles on the stockpile will have both a barrel and an individual item. The process of adding new barrels to the stockpile is so slow; you will see a swarm of dwarfs put 50 items on a stockpile before a new empty barrel is moved. If I were to guess, the code runs "check if that stockpile needs a new empty barrel" about 1 time for every 10 times the code runs "check if that stockpile could use a few more individual items". But, the difference is that it takes fewer "dwarf work hours" to fill containers than it takes to fill a stockpile with individual items.

I've made another food stockpile for overflow. That stockpile is about half full of items outside of barrels and has no barrels whatsoever, despite being set for the maximum number of barrels. I have it set to give to the first stockpile, as the first is closer to where I want my food to be. Would that cause problems?
An overflow stockpile, with or without barrels, will work well. I use an overflow stockpile without barrels, because barrels only respect other barrels, not other stockpiles.

For the crafts, they will eventually be binned, it just takes time. You may see many idlers while the slow binning is being done, this is because it only takes one dwarf to haul a bin and then one dwarf to fill that bin. You could take the opportunity to get them working on making nicer temples, taverns, and libraries, so they have something to spend their free time on.
