I have four squads composed almost entirely of mercenaries. I have given the squads a barracks to sleep in, but I have noticed that despite the barracks having plenty of beds, the mercenaries still sleep on the floor in the barracks. Is there a way to create a barracks that mercenaries will sleep in?

Maybe this is the problem. From the wiki: "Squads must be assigned to a barracks before they will use it for training or sleeping. Press q and select the barracks. Use +/- to highlight a squad, then t to assign that squad to train there, or z to assign the squad to sleep there."

No this is a merc specific problem. They won't use the beds in the barracks. The game is restricting them to beds in tavern based bedroons (because they're long-term visitors, not citizens), but forgetting to allow an exception for mercs in squads to use barracks beds.
There's a bug report somewhere on the tracker, I think. It'll get fixed eventually.

Attention from whom?
Only one person can fix bugs and he doesn't comment until it's done or he needs more feedback. It's a straightforward bug, just needs to be addresed when there's time to look at it. Let them sleep in their rooms for now.

Ah, that's about dormitories which is probably working as intended. Probably should make a merc report next time it happens. Some fortress defences rely on troops sleeping in barracks and not their rooms.
